Research problem

Euthanasia is a new-age concept that supports the ideology of having the quality of life instead of quantity of life. It is found to be prevalent more in the older generation or population who is suffering from terminally ill diseases and who have no hope of improvement despite of the ongoing treatments (Emanuel et al., 2016). However, it has raised a valid question in the minds of various scholars and academicians regarding the ethical nature of this concept. Furthermore, the practice of euthanasia has been severely criticized in the past on the grounds of morality as well as the code of conduct or practices which bind the healthcare professionals. Hence, it becomes a very vital topic of research in today’s modern age where nothing is in black and white and this topic requires critical discretion and decision making to reach a satisfying solution.

Aim of research

The main aim of this research is to analyze the gravity in the practicing euthanasia all across the globe and viewing it in the light of respecting the autonomy of the patient as well as all living creatures. Thus, it justifies the title of the research which is, “is euthanasia everyone’s right?” The identification of the purposes and medical histories of the patients in the practice of euthanasia reveals many aspects of healthcare decision-making processes and rests the power of decision with the patients.

Research objectives

• To identify the practice of euthanasia in alignment with the autonomy of the patient.
• To understand how practicing euthanasia in the healthcare setting is different and how it helps serve humanity.

Research Questions

• Should euthanasia be regarded as the individual choice of a patient?
• Is the practice of euthanasia helpful in serving humanity?

The rationale of Research study

In a healthcare setting, euthanasia is being practiced in the case of patients who are terminally ill with the permission of the physicians who are treating them (Keown, 2018). They only help in reducing the suffering of the patient due to any condition which has a poor prognosis and treatment outcome specifically in cases of people who are suffering from mental disorders, euthanasia serves as an option of escape from the pain and misery. However, this practice has been conveniently selected by the patient to escape their deliberating state of mind of the physical ailment without seeking medical help first. This raises an ethical and moral concern for any healthcare professional (Emanuel et al., 2016)

Research Approach

The indicative research approach has been adopted for sourcing the relevant information from multiple sources by broadening the horizon for enhancing the quality of research and understanding of the topic (Cash, 2018). It uses the theoretical analysis of literature to draw a valid conclusion, with the help of secondary data as the data collection tool.

Research Design

Descriptive research design has been used in this study, by encompassing the qualitative data for finding the answers to the research questions (Johnston, 2017). The data has been gathered by using peer-reviewed articles and journals for conducting analysis and in-depth understanding of the topic to reach a justifiable and valid conclusion. The descriptive research design helps in an effective understanding of the topic based on evidence collected from the journals and extracting the relevant data in the form of an elaborative literature review (Kydd, 2016).

Data collection

Secondary data has been used, using the peer-reviewed articles and journals, in English language. Abstract screening method was used to narrow down the research as well as only those articles were used from year ranging between 2015 to 2020.
