Section 2: Discussion on Computing Descriptive Statistics

Demonstrate your ability to consider aspects of your data such as the collection protocol, and your ability to interpret descriptive statistics appropriately.

  1. Write one paragraph on what issues there might be for the scientists who are collecting these data, to ensure data quality. For example, what measures could scientists take to ensure that temperature records are consistent across the whole 60 year period? Or, what would it mean for the reliability of the data if the rain gauge tended to fail in high winds?

Weather data are crucial components of making decisions. Overtime weather stations may stop working due to lack of maintenance and out of order. In these situations, the data values may not be recorded resulting in problems of missing values. This will cause huge problems while analyzing the data. As we know quality of data relies heavily on the equipment, techniques used for data collection, and the time at which data collected . To make consistent weather data or temperature data over time is the use of advanced technology in collecting data. In the given example gathering 60 years of data raise a question of types of equipment used to measure the data and how much equipments are replaced over sixty years. The change in measuring instruments creates inconsistency in the data. If Introducing new technology along with the continued use of old equipment will enable us to compare and adjust the measurements if needed. If a rain gauge tends to fall due to heavy rain the obtained may not be reliable. So scientists should include windy conditions that are likely to overlap with the rainy condition as a key part of the dataset.

  1. Write one or two paragraphs highlighting any salient features of your data, and in particular any features which you find interesting or surprising. For example, which location has higher rainfall, and does this match your expectations? Or, do either of your locations have a surprisingly large or small spread between the average minimum and maximum temperatures, compared with what you are used to in Melbourne?

The average annual rainfall in Alice spring was 288mm which was slightly more than Mildura (282mm).Alice spring has recorded lowest annual rainfall of 34mm which was much lower than the minimum rainfall recorded in Mildura. Standard deviation of rainfall was more in case of Alice spring. Maximum temperature was around 29 degree Celsius in Alice Spring and 24 degree Celsius in Mildura. Standard deviation of temperature was more in case of Alice (0.97) compared to Mildura (0.82).Average annual minimum temperature in Alice was 13.26 degree Celsius and 10.43 degree Celsius in Mildura. Standard deviation of minimum temperature was more in case of Alice Springs(1.01) compared to Mildura(0.41)
