New Registered Nurse Clinical Skills

The nurses are expected to showcase professional, ethical and legal values during the care and they should utilize different professional standards to maintain the quality of care. The professional standard includes code of conduct, code of ethics and standard of practice that help to maintain professionalism by providing accurate care to the patient (Nursing and Midwifery Board, 2017). During my clinical placement, I have on my round in night shift where I found that a patient was having difficulty in breathing and when I searched for the enrolled nurse in charge she was gossiping with her colleague. Firstly I immediately utilized by the professional standard to provide oxygen therapy to the patient to improve the comfort. Then I went to talk to both of the enrolled nurses can and tell them that as a nurse they are expected to follow the code of ethics and should avoid negligence toward the patient.

Effective communication is one of the important aspects of nursing professional as it allows the nurse to utilize interpersonal skills during patient care. The patient experience is directly related to the rapport with the health care professional thus nurses are expected to utilize their verbal and nonverbal communication skill with the patient to improve understanding (Vogel et al., 2018). One day of my clinical placement I was performing my daily duty when a patient-administered to the hospital. I immediately rushed towards the patient as she is having difficulty in breathing and little anxious then I take her toward the cabin to provide her privacy. First thing I utilized my effective communication skill to increase her comfort as she belongs to the Indigenous community. Then I immediately utilized by clinical my clinical skill to perform the ABCDE assessment and before performing the assessment I asked her for permission to increase her comfort.

The clinical skills are considered to be the ability to identify, interpret and judge patient symptoms to provide them with accurate care. The problem-solving skills are the ability of the nurse to critically analyse the situation and assist to provide the accurate intervention. These both skills are considered to be a key feature of the nurses as it improves the patient assessment my utilizing accurate skills (Jamshidi et al., 2016). During my placement a patient encountered with shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing I immediately analyzed that the patient could be suffering from asthma. I effectively collected the patients’ condition and medical history, performed diagnostic tests such as skin allergy tests, chest radiography, and peak expiratory flow. With interpretation from these diagnostic results, I could confirm and satisfy that the patient is suffering from asthma. Then I asked her if she has her puffer with her and after some time, the patient was recovered.

Disciplines and individuals have a significant role to play in making sure that a safe and positive experience for the patient is achieved. The interdisciplinary framework relies upon health care specialists from different disciplines along with the patient and working in a collaborative as one team. The interdisciplinary care approach is defined as working together as one team towards a common goal (Tremblay et al., 2017). During my clinical placement, we were required to work closely as a team with other medical staff, physiotherapies, and speech pathology among other disciplines. For instance, when performing operations, we were supposed to share responsibilities and promote role interdependence while respecting one’s experience and autonomy. Working alongside physicians, surgeons, and other specialists, we were able to provide well-organized comprehensive care thus promoting positive patient outcomes. During my placement, I was also able to show my interdisciplinary by supporting and helping other less skilled professionals as a team to become better clinicians.

The workplace cultural framework of the New South Wales Government has stated that four aspects are required to be considered during patient care. The different aspect includes collaboration, openness, respect and empowerment that help the health care professional to utilize their skill to improve patient care (New South Wales Government, 2012). During patient care, I was able to utilize my clinical skills as I tried to collaborate with my multidisciplinary team to improve patient care. Before the patient treatment, I tried to openly explain the treatment to the patient and his family to improve the understanding regarding the care. The cultural difference of the patient was respected during the care as I tried to take permission before touching and assessing the patient. During the conversation, I tried to empower the patient by increasing his ability to decide for the treatment as it increases the participation of the patient.

The scope of practice as Registered nurses is to follow the professional roles, responsibility and action a nurse concerning the patient (Feringaa et al., 2018). I was instructed to attend the patient who was presented to the hospital with clinical manifestation of weaknesses, fatigue, headache, sweating, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain. I assessed the patient by recording his medical history as well as evaluating the physical examination that helps to evaluate the patient current condition. After analyzing the patient I was able to interpret that he is suffering from typhoid then I immediately reported the reading to my mentor to confirm my interpretation. After analyzing the assessment he also concluded the same then he prescribed the medication as per the patient current situation. The patient was immediately administered with medication prescribed by the doctor and I tried to continuously monitor the patient to reduce the chances of complication that can due to medicine.
