In the subject code NSD203, my professor took classes on the topic "evidence-based practices (EBP)". He taught us the concept of EBP and its importance in the healthcare industry. He made me understand EBP through lectures and presentations. He gave various study materials to me that could help me understand this topic in a better way. I was given a few assignments also by the professor to gain more information about EBP. The professor gave examples of some events that emphasized the role of EBP in building a healthy relationship between the patient and healthcare professionals. I cleared some of my doubts about EBP by asking questions to the professor, and he answered all of them with patience.
I worked upon certain assignments for continuous learning that helped me to grasp the topic. The professor asked me to give a group presentation on "Importance of EBP in the healthcare industry". I was a part of a group with three members for the presentation, and I was given enough time for the preparation. I interacted with all the members, and we divided the work between us. I was allotted the task of collecting information about the ways in which healthcare professionals can use the approach of EBP in enhancing their relationship with the patients. I studied two to three research journals about EBP and healthcare from some online sources and made a short note on it.
Although I worked hard for the presentation by studying the basics of EBP still, the presentation was average due to the lack of information. He believed that my group only focused on theoretical knowledge and did not provide any real-life examples that could depict the failure of the healthcare industry in the absence of EBP. He also mentioned that I lacked confidence, and my communication skills were not up to the mark. I realized that I was not able to perform well because I lacked detailed knowledge about EBP. According to Shu, Meijuan and Xeujiao (2019), the community nurses lacking the knowledge of EBP fail to implement safe interventions effectively, and they are only dependent on their experience which may not cater to all the challenging situations. Patient care can be improved if healthcare professionals are provided with enough knowledge about EBP in their research training programs (Black et al., 2015). I became aware of my shortcomings through this presentation task, and I understood that EBP is an essential concept that all healthcare professionals should implement during their practice.
I plan to have depth knowledge of EBP in the future by studying it properly from various online lectures and professor's notes. I am going to gain more information about all the concepts related to EBP and, most importantly, the role of EBP in healthcare. I have understood that I cannot become an efficient healthcare professional until I learn about the effective implementation of EBP in my practice. All people working as nursing experts have to implement their knowledge of EBP to ensure the safety of the patients (Harper et al., 2017). I will also focus on enhancing my communication skills by taking active participation in presentations, debates, and other extracurricular activities and through learning from literature. This will not only improve my communication with other people but also boost up my confidence level to interact with patients in the future effectively.
