Engagement in Professional Nursing

Leadership is the action being done, implemented, or performed by a group of people in the organization, society, or community. There are some contributory terms that are associated with maintaining leadership. These terms are humbleness, supportive, inspiring, aspiring, decisiveness, responsible, empowerment, encouragement, and a god planner (Surji, 2015). Leaders have a great impact on the development of society, organization, and nation. Thus, the essay describes the importance, influence, and fruitfulness criteria of leaders in healthcare. The essay will also depict the in-depth reflection of the registered nurse and the thought in relation to the leadership in healthcare.

The aim of leadership, management, and operation is to provide good services in the community in an appropriate, efficient, equitable, and sustainable manner. With this in mind, I remember one of my seniors who is working at Mildura Base Hospital. II met her during my nursing training in nursing course. My senior named Miss. Lussie Johnson is a great personality I have ever met Lussie Johnson has the vision in her mind to achieve a goal with respect to health management. She is focussed on the management of clinical practices and does a lot to achieve patient health and patient safety. I remember the day when she scolded her teammate because her teammate has missed the patient medication once a day. This is unaccepted to her as she always believes that patient safety and patient health is an utmost important parameter in the health care organization. Because of her patient-center care approach, she was also the part of health care system improvement committee. The objective adopted by her included hospital care, system performance, health reform objective, timely are delivery, health care system integrity, health care system efficiency, and patient care and safety. Stawicki & Firstenberg (2014) opined that effective clinical leadership ensures the high-quality health care system, which helps in providing safe, efficient, and effective health care to the patient. According to me Miss Lussie Johnson is a great leader because she has always worked hard in ensuring the quality of health; she put enough effort in making junior nurse, registered nurse, and other medical care providers understand the situation and work exhaustively; she is down to earth personality; eager to learn new things; and excel in problem-solving skills and cognition development. I think these are the basic and most important that should be present in the healthcare leader.

Important Qualities for A Leader

Quality of care is a vital element for achieving a high production level in the health care organization. The leaders in the health care organization may adopt various styles of leadership such as transformational, transactional, autocratic, task-oriented, relationship-oriented leadership, and laissez-faire, and result-oriented leadership (Sfantou et al., 2017). This leadership helps one to plan work activities, hands-off approaches, roles, and responsibility clarifications, setting the objectives, and monitoring and evaluating the loopholes in the organization. These organizations provide the relationship-oriented leadership style and help in supporting, development, and recognition. Effective leadership is recognized as the crucial role model in shaping the organizational culture and also drives the implementation of various reforms in the health care sector (Ayeleke, 2017). These characteristics help in growing health management, controlling, budgeting, implementing, and evaluating the available resource to meet the unmet need of patients, workers, and care providers. Along with this, there are some of the characteristic that needs to be in leaders such as humbleness, supportive, inspiring, aspiring, decisiveness, responsible, empowerment, encouragement, and a god planner (Surji, 2015). Thus, these features help in developing professional behavior and professional identity.

Skills

Disciplined is an important skill that needs to be maintained in health care organizations (Verhoef, 2015). The disciplinary process has an impact on the overall growth, organization working, and proper management. The adoption of disciplinary characteristics helps in providing a fitness approach, practice proceeding, and a state of flux. The national medical board also provide the importance of disciplinary prospects in the health care organization because of the disciplinary action help in incorporating patient safety, patient performance, hazard identification, and effective treatment option (Miguel, 2018). In health care, discipline needs to be adopted in hierarchies, vertical, teacher-centric level, department, institutional level, and each ward (Miguel, 2018).

Problem-solving skill is another set of characteristics that should be adopted and maintained in health care settings. These settings help in dealing with the sudden and random problems and thus have a critical role in disease management. Problem-solving skill is a complex process that requires random approach skill while dealing with the problem. These skills help in recognizing, understanding the problem, dealing with the situation, evaluating its solution method, and persistent to the problem (Saygili, 2017). These problems are then solved using the best possible way with the availability of alternative methods.

I think as the growing registered nurse I would like to develop discipline and problem-solving skills because both skills are the main pillar of leadership development. Leadership is the challenge to ensure the best possible way of delivering quality and safety. Moreover, the health care organization experience random and sudden change situations that can be treated through good problem-solving skills. Discipline is the next factor for any work to do be it a health care organization or any other professional organization. Thus, discipline is the next step for achievements, satisfaction, and quality work. According to me, I would be focussing and would be working in gaining discipline and problem-solving skills.

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that leadership is the personality and art of the person that helps in achieving the set target in any organization. Leadership qualities can be attained through clinical experience, beliefs, and perspective of the individual with respect to work, society, and future goals. In health care setting, leadership is important to maintain the safety of a person, ensure their health, reduce the risk, and provide a patient-centric approach. With this concept in mind, I would like to adopt disciplined and problem-solving skills to grow my leadership qualities. I would like to follow the guidelines thoroughly like my senior Miss. Lussie Johnson had followed.
