Literacies and Communication for Health Care

I am a student nurse and this is my first month working at the aged care facility at Ipswich. I have been above average student in my nursing school years and this opportunity at Ipswich is my first professional experience by myself. in my experience I find it more educational to work with the elderly. It makes me feel like am fulfilling my purpose as a nurse. In my summer months I have been working with the aged care facility and it has given me an immense opportunity to learn so much.

but the experience I had recently has made me reflect hard on my behaviour and principles as a nurse. Despite having the adequate knowledge as an above average nursing student I feel like my conversation skills and presence of mind has really failed me in this situation. Let me explain. Mrs. Ling is also a widow of 4 months and is still grieving the loss of her husband who cared for her due to her reduced mobility. The recent displacement of a residential status has left her a little confused and upset and she is often found asking about her return to the home which her husband has built for them in Australia.

That morning we had a small interaction where I praised her for being self-reliant enough to finish her morning chores, but she somehow misconstrued it as an assurance that she will be going back home.

When her son arrived, he obviously asked for the reason why he is mom was insisting on going back home. We had a discussion for about 15 minutes and then I ended up explaining really loudly that Mrs/ling had misunderstood my praise. This was extremely wrong on my part and I can clearly see the lack of effective communication strategies that caused this.

As a nurse , it is also my responsibility to reciprocate and provide her a safe place to vice her thoughts. the fact that her husband passed away only a few months ago and she still has to cope, compassionate care on my part is essential so as to ease her transition

I need to work on my interpersonal communication styles and understand the intensity and scope of a situation before reacting. It extremely important to take into consideration that mrs. Ling is in a precarious situation and she has to be treated with utmost kindness encouragement and respect. As is the norm with all patients, our job is to provide them with as much support as possible in order to make their lives easier
