Transition to Professional Practice

Introduction to Gibb’s Reflection Essay

The reflective essay will help in identifying the role of leadership in nursing and the challenges as well as context associated with the same. It will also help in shedding a light on the various aspects such as leadership styles, leadership skills, and all necessary tools required to gain success in this role (Hariyati, 2018). The essay will make use of Gibb's reflective cycle, which will help in analyzing the leadership role of the nurses through a holistic approach. This reflective cycle will also help in identifying the short-comings and developing the required skills and techniques to make sure that the duties of the nurse as a leader will be executed in full capacity (Kelly, 2017).

Personal and Professional Reflection

I feel that strong and effective nursing leadership skills can only be delivered when a strong bond of trust and fairness is maintained in delivering clinical services. It is also important to maintain robust clinical practice and a healthy working environment as well. These leadership qualities are also necessary for maintaining a strong influence on the working of the system. However, while managing personal and professional aspects of the nursing leadership role, nursing professionals are usually faced with multiple challenges (Elliott, 2017). As a nursing professional, even I feel that I have been subjected to dilemma situations on multiple occasions. While managing a good healthy environment patient safety is also to be maintained. The role of nurses also requires deliverance of quality of treatment to the patient and this might involve not keeping ourselves as the priority. It is crucial for us to apply the correct leadership style as per the given case scenario. While dispersing these job roles, it is important to make sure that the goals are set and the care plan is drafted in accordance with the same. Nursing leadership is also comprised of change in the process. It can be in the shape of implementing proper nursing skills and maintaining a sound vision while managing care and delivery of healthcare services. I believe that to have greater impact nurses have to be ready to adapt to change as and when required. The importance of the leadership quality of the nurses has been quite indisputable (Warren, 2016). The transformational role of nursing leadership can also be deemed as one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles as well. it not only allows power and authority to the nurses as a leader but rather also helps in dissipating the role of nurses as a leader, through a collaborative approach. This can be challenging while drawing a fine line between the formal authority and the organization responsible for the legitimate conduction of nursing and other healthcare activities. While managing care the nurses also develop themselves through the medium of the patient experience. The challenging situations that I as a nurse has been subjected to, have helped me in grooming my overall skill set. These situational analyses also help in defining the responsibilities as well as the accountability of nurses in the role of leadership. There can also be a difference of opinion while managing and delivering care for a patient through a collaborative approach (Sherman, 2018). The daily struggles of nurse professionals can also be inclusive of maintaining a robust relationship between the members of the interdisciplinary team. Another striking challenge can be defining the roles of the team members and ensuring the smooth facilitation of healthcare delivery services to the patients.

Evaluation of Gibb’s Reflection Essay

The expected results of the leadership role of the nursing professionals can be regulated and analyzed by the means of positive and negative outputs of the care plan executed. The nurses should be, however, subjected to challenging and complex case scenarios where they get to test their bounds and limitations. These situations can provide the nursing practitioners with a good insight into the areas of concerns, requiring ramifications (Bradley, 2019). Time and on interventions like these can help in defining a greater role of nurse professionals in the care management of patients. this can be reflected upon for adopting the best possible leadership style required to tackle all the hurdles faced during delivery of care facilities to the patient. The leadership role of the nurse can be deemed as pivotal and of utter importance and constant resurrections are required to ensure performance with full throttle. The importance of quality assurance in the process cannot be nullified as well (Warshawsky, 2019). One is required to have a keen observation and giving oneself sufficient space to acknowledge their short-comings to be worked upon. Management style needs to be effective and on-point so that no stone is left unturned in delivering an accurate message as required. Both negative and positive aspects should be examined and worked upon to make sure a holistic approach is adopted and complete justice to the leadership role id delivered. Observation should also be made in a timely manner so that the task can be executed within the allotted time span.

Analysis of Gibb’s Reflection Essay

Clinical leadership is not only a definition rather a whole concept that needs to be evaluated through various attributes. In order to define the role of leadership in nursing one needs to understand the criticalities attached to the subject matter. This concept can either focus on the personal qualities of the nursing profession and on the team as a whole as well. by evaluating these elements one can ponder upon the factors as to how effective a support system and work environment can be created. Effective leadership in the nursing profession is very vital in ensuring the building of string resilience within the multidisciplinary team (Thomas, 2018).

The concept of clinical leadership can also be confused with the term management. However, not all of the nursing leaders may have the management skills, especially to tackle the complex situations they might be subjected to (Giddens, 2018). Leadership skills are however required to motivate and influence the patients as well as the team members in a positive manner. A good leader is able to set attainable goals and aim to achieve the same. Nurses as a leader are required to serve as a role model and influence their co-workers in an effective manner. This is also required to make sure that the duties are to carry out in full capacity. A good and sound leader is required to open to all new challenges and accept it with embracing sense. The work needs to be delivered, ensuring benefits for others yet also enabling resilience within the team.

Responsibility of educating one own self as well as others is also required by a good nursing leader. Along with strong leadership skills, one is supposed to possess good clinical reasoning, which is crucial to improve the overall healthcare outcomes of the patients. These skills have to be imparted to young and aspiring nursing graduates as well (Lee, 2017).

Clinical leadership is also supposed to provide the young scholars with a setting example, enabling them an insight into the working of the system in a professional manner. The highest values in terms of ethical considerations should be practiced as well as imparted to the young professionals. It will help in ensuring good clinical leadership qualities right from the lowest level in the hierarchy to the highest level. It is also crucial, not only to build a strong interpersonal relationship between the team members but is also crucial to ensure the healthy working of the organizational system as a whole (Tang, 2018). Strategies are also to be formulated keeping a close consideration for these aspects of the nursing profession.

Strategies for Practice

One of the main strategies to have opted in to make sure robust and effective communication channels are established between the nurses and their patients. Effective communication medium should be maintained within the team members as well (Song, 2016). Communication is also required to make sure that team members are strongly connected and that all of them are well-versed with their individual roles as well. Leadership roles should be opted as per the circumstances and various medical situations. Effective communication skills will also be quite fruitful in identifying the grey areas of concerns that might require more focus to be pondered upon.

Resistance is one of the major barriers that a nurse leader might experience while dealing with both their team members as well as the patients. Communication can thus, be an effective strategy aiming to narrow down that gap by multiple folds. Strong clinical leadership is required to influence and persuade the clinical staff. This is quite crucial to managing the care of the patient in an efficient manner, which is the main role of the nurse. Strategies to improve patient care and quality should also be recognized. Good leadership will be able to reform strategies that will be helpful to attain both long-term as well as short-term goals set for patient care and coordination (Poghosyan, 2016).

Team members should also be given an equal level of autonomy to have a say in the process. This will be beneficial in analyzing a situation from a different perspective. It will also enable the nurse leader to build a stronger interpersonal relationship with their team members and thus, making sure of smooth facilitation of the healthcare service delivery and coordination. With a greater level of acceptance of the role of leadership and of the team as a whole, positive implications can be reinforced in the working of the system as a whole.

Conclusion on Gibb’s Reflection Essay

One of the constant challenges faced by the nurses is managing a healthy state of emotional as well as physical well-being. It is very important to make sure that professional duties are executed as per the required standards. Along with effective communication, strong leadership qualities are required to emancipate the functioning of the system and the designated tasks assigned to the team members. The leadership role is very crucial as it provides a methodical and directional approach to the working if the system and defining it within its bounds and regulation as per the required standards and guidelines. Leadership orientation is also required to make sure that proper orientation is also enabled in the system and is included in all walks of patient care and coordination.
