Transition to Professional Practice

Reflection is considered to be the best practise for the nursing profession that is important to improve future practice by improving the working pattern. Reflection helps the nurse to learn from their past experiences by considering all the different aspect concerning the scenario (Koshy et al.2017). The changing health care is more focused on patient-tailored care that can be improved by adopting clinical leadership in the care to improve the working practice (Yoon et al., 2016). The essay is going to discuss the reflection concerning the strategies to improve clinical leadership in the care by using relevant literature.

This is the reflection of one of the clinical practice incident that has helped me to improve as a nurse and learn about important clinical leadership in the care. During my clinical placement, I understand that being an RN is a tough job as you have to maintain the effective balance between the quality of care and student nurse skills. RN is expected to instruct and help student nurse during the care to improve their clinical skills. During this placement, I observed how my mentor is using effective clinical leadership skills to maintain everything appropriately in the care. I also realized the importance of leadership skills in nursing and RN are expected to be a good clinical leader to improve quality of care.

However, while delegating the task she has faced issue due to lack of skills to work with a team that increases complication as team members are not clear about their delegate roles. There are many challenges that I have observed during my clinical placement that is related to the clinical leader. Nurses as the leader have to manage multiple aspects but the only aim is to deliver the quality care to the patient. One of the challenges that restrict effective clinical leadership includes internal restrictions that arise due to the difference in the thinking process of the team and leader. The leaders are expected to bring together every member of the team to provide effective care by considering the ethical aspect.

During the round one of the team members informed her regarding the reluctance behaviour of the patient concerning the intervention. This is another challenge she faced while I was working under her because she had a conflict with the patient concerning the intervention. The conflict regarding the choice of intervention can increase complication as nurses are expected to provide quality care but the patient is refusing. She was not able to help the patient to explain the importance of the intervention as per the health status.

After experiencing this scenario I was very confused concerning how to tackle these situations to maintain the quality of care in the practice. As an RN effective clinical leadership is important to delegate the tasks that increase the accountability of the nurses to complete the work. I was also a bit happy that after this scenario I understand the different gap in the skills that are necessary to be a good clinical leader. The incident has been a reality check for me as I was able to trace out the skills that are necessary for the transition to become an RN and I need to improve my skills. Before the transition from student nurse to RN, I will try to improve my skills that are important to work in a team. Better teamwork skills will help me the delegation and coordination with the team member to improve quality of care. To deal with the patient I will incorporate cultural competency with therapeutic communication to improve patient experience within the care. These skills will help me after the transition and improve the clinical practice as an RN.

The leadership quality is important to improve the working practice and maintain harmony within the team. One of the leadership styles that help the leader to maintain the balance between the quality of work and perspective of the follower is transactional styles (Sfantou et al., 2017). It demands the leader to link the different positive outcome as the individual level to the organizational level. The transformational leader works toward the common goal by coordinating with the followers to improve the quality of work by working together. The leader improves their relationship with their followers by considering the individual idea to embrace the thought process and team spirit (Ahmed et al., 2016). Clinical leadership is very important when it comes to the role of nurses and they are expected to improve their leadership skills to increase the quality of care. Clinical leadership combines leadership quality with the RN work to improve the quality of care and improve the patient experience (Karkada & Cherian, 2017). Many skills are important to be a clinical leader and one of them is the teamwork skills that are important to coordinate with the team members. The right clinical leader skills are important to improve the quality of care and improve the student nurse skills. Two qualities that are important to build strong team spirit are following the advantageous role and giving feedback that improves team coordination (Joseph & Huber, 2015).

Communication is one of the important features of the leader as it helps to improve the exchange of the thought process within the team. Leaders are considered to be the backbone of the implementation of the change thus they have to establish the coordination with the team. The leader should utilize verbal and nonverbal communication skills to improve communication and increase the quality of care (Henderson, 2015). Clinical leaders are expected to be good at therapeutic communication to help the patient to understand the importance of different clinical practice. Therapeutic communication is necessary to develop a rapport with the patient that is necessary to increase patient participation in care by explaining the importance of the procedure concerning the health status. The nurse should improve their therapeutic communication skills to increase the accuracy of the intervention by improving patient participation in the care (Fakhr-Movahedi et al., 2016).

These pieces of evidence indicate the importance of teamwork skills and therapeutic communication in clinical leader practice. These skills will help the RN to improve the teamwork by increasing harmony and increase the better patient experience by maintaining the rapport.

This scenario has made me realised that being a clinical leadership is not an easy task and a nurse you have to improve your skills to justify the skills related to the clinical leader. The clinical practice has helped me to understand the different challenges that can be encountered during practise and to be ready for the transformation by improving my skills to provide the quality of care after being an RN. During the scenario, I was able to trace two issues that are hampering the quality of care that includes a lack of teamwork skills and incompatibility to explain clinical practice to the patient. The clinical leader has to improve the team performance by delegating the different task and they are responsible to improve the patient experience. The incident helped to identify the gap in the skills that are necessary to be RN and thus I have to improve my nursing skills to justify the professional practise.

The right leadership is necessary to implement the change in the practice with the team that is necessary to improve the quality of care and coordinating with the patient is important to improve patient satisfaction. After evaluating the different evidence reveals that teamwork skills are important and leaders are expected to collaborate with the team to team to improve the practice. Transformational leadership is considered to be appropriate when it comes to clinical leadership as it helps to equal participation of the followers in the decision making. The clinical leader should equally provide the chance to every individual of the team to put forward their perspective that is necessary for better team performance.

On the other hand communication skills are equally important to improve the patient experience concerning the care procedure. The clinical leader should use both verbal and non-verbal communication method with the patient to improve their understanding of the clinical procedure. The better rapport with the patient will help the nurse to improve the patient participation that is important for the quality of care and patient satisfaction.

The scenario has been an important time in my clinical placement to improve my skills and to justly the professional responsibilities that are expected from an RN. Being a student nurse this scenario has helped me to understand the important qualities that are required to be a good RN and improve the patient experience that is the main of the health care services.

There are two skills that I need to improve before becoming the RN that includes improves the teamwork skills and communication skills to justify the quality of care. One of the methods that are necessary to improve the teamwork skills includes team-building intervention that is important to improve the understanding regarding the different technique. Team building intervention is necessary to understand different aspects that are necessary to improve the teamwork which is required to provide appropriate care to the patient (McEwan et al., 2017). The team-building intervention utilized the team effectiveness pyramid to improve teamwork. The different level of the team effectiveness pyramid includes foundational resources, team-building intervention, patient impact and enhanced team functioning. The team effectiveness pyramids help the individual to improve the coordination in the team that is necessary to improve the quality of care (Miller et al., 2019).

The communication skills workshop is also an excellent method to improve communication by adopting different strategies that are important for the quality of care. The workshop will cover all the different aspect that is necessary to improve communication (Tavakoly Sanye et al., 2020). Some of the important aspects include verbal communication strategies, non-verbal communication importance, culturally competent communication and different strategies for effective communication. This communication workshop will help the individual to understand the right procedure to convey their thought to team members or patient to improve the care procedure. The workshop will also help to explain the importance of communication took for the self-assessment and it also helps to improve the issue by identifying the gap (Dithole et al., 2017).

The learning that I have gained through this incident that to being a clinical leader the nurses are expected to have excellent teamwork skills and effective communication skills. The clinical leaders have to coordinate with the team and improve the rapport with the patient to provide quality care. The incident helped to understand that I also need to improve my teamwork skills and communication skills that are required to justify the role of RN. The two methods that can be used to improve the skills include teambuilding intervention and communication skills workshop. These two methods will help me to improve my skill that is necessary for the transition from student nurse to RN.
