Primary Health Care in a Global Context

The sustainable development goals which are also termed as global goals were implemented in 2015 by the United Nations Members States. These goals are considered to be the universal call to action with the aim to end the poverty and for the protection of the planet. The main objective of these goals is to enable all the people to enjoy prosperity and peace by the year 2030. In sustainable development goals there are in total 17interconnected goals that have been designed to be a "blueprint for achieving animproved sustainable future for everyone". Out of the 17 goals, the goal selected for this assessment is goal 3 i.e., good health and well-being for people (United Nation Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.).

The third goal of sustainable development goals i.e., good health and well-being for people aims in ensuring the healthy lives along with promoting the well-being of the people of all ages (United Nations Development Programme, 2020)In this goal there are total of 13 targets and out of them nine are the outcome targets. This goal looks forward to fight with the communicable diseases; preventing and treating the global issue of substance abuse; ensuring the reduction in mortality from the diseases that are non-communicable diseases; reduction in road accidents that leads to injuries and deaths; and promotionof mental health; family planning and education; granting the universal access to the reproductive as well as sexual care, achieving the universal health coverage; and reduction of hazardous chemicals and pollution associated disorders (United Nations Development Programme, 2020).

Nursing plays a major role in achieving the sustainable development goals and specifically goal 3 i.e., good health and well-being for people. In order to achieve this goal universal health coverage is important and this could only be achieved with the support as well as the thoughtful deployment for health resources and in this nursing act as a pillar by giving competent and abundant nurses throughout the world. Health and well-being is the ultimate aim of goal 3 and in order to ensure the healthy lives and promoting the well-being for all the age groups nursing plays a key role. It is responsible for promoting the health, preventing the illness, caring of people that are physically or mentally ill and those who are disabled. Not only this, it also plays a major role in the planning of workforces, conduction and maintenance of high quality research, development of multi-sectorial approaches to the care services, and designingand development of models of care. The evolving field of the global health looks forward for the wisdom as well as advocacy which are decisivelyingrained in the perspective of nursing. It has been reported that global nurses have been contributing since long time back as leaders and agents and part in bringing up a considerable change whenever it comes to the advancement of environmental, physiologic, economic, and social health determinants. Therefore, it has been noted that the nurses can potentially make imperative contributions in achieving the goal 3 of sustainable development goals across settings.

Nursing helps in engaging and influencing the and persuading the accomplishment of the determined sustainable development goals and this could happen only when nurses value and associate their goals individually as well as collectively with the ongoing work of sustainable development goals. There is a need to focus their efforts as per the specific goals and must advocate for the required change(Rosa et al., 2019).Nursing plays a major role in enhancing an individual’s abilities in order to take care for themselves; to diminishtheir suffering; for ensuring the effective conversions back to their good health and well-being, in contributing to the populations’ quality of life; and in facilitating thecapabilitiesof the population in order to function (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).Nursing helps in providing the compassionate care to the peopleirrespective of their race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, culture, or educational levels. It has been seen that the nurses have been providingcare globally since ages to both the most vulnerable and financially unstable and to the least vulnerable and financially stable as well(Chao, 2019).

This was the role they has now, the role that they could play in achieving so would be by applying pertinent prevention strategies that would help in fostering the positive physical as well aspsychological health and well-being of the people. However, making the sustainable development goals an integral part of nurses’ daily routine(Chao, 2019). This could be achieved by promoting and educatingregarding the requirement for the universal health coverage. As nursing has always been a powerful support touniversal health coverage and it has been seen that augmenting the potential of nursing alone will not be a solution, incorporating universal health coverage along with the nursing would help in achieving the goal of good health and well-being. Advancing the gender equality, expanding the roles of nursing in order to provide a better prominence on the public health and collaborating with the communities to leverage the voices of nurses in influencing exercise, safe water supplies, healthy eating, clean air, and the eradication of hunger and poverty would act as a step to the ladder of success of this goal. Nurses are also the front line warriors as they always keep fighting other public health concerns, this include mental and substance use (American Nurses Association, n.d.).

Nurses also play a major role in achieving the goal of good health and well-being byeducating the people for sexual as well as reproductive health that have been taken for granted by certain vulnerable groups along with this by early assessment of risk and giving them warning in order to avoid the associated potential risk. This effort should not only be made at an individual level but should also be made at institutional, national, and international level (Chao, 2019).

However, there are certain barriers to the role of nursing in achieving the role. One of the identified barriers that challenge the role of nursing is that it is anticipated that there would be a considerable shortage of millions of skilled health professionals including midwives, nurses, and physicians which has been predicted to be 10.1 million by the year 2030. The insufficiency of the qualified health professionals is considered to be one of the majorbarriersin achieving the effectiveness of the health system effectiveness (Chao, 2019). Along with this cultural competence is also considered to be a barrier in achieving the goal. For this more programs regarding the nursing education are importantso, asufficient amount of nursing workforce would be achieved in order to meet the needs. While, focusing on to the remote communities in the countries with low/mid incomes, it has been reportedly seen that, the primary healthcare that is delivered at the local level is dependent on the proficiency of the nursing assistants or the community health workers (Tomblin& Ross, 2015).

As per the set goals of ensuring healthy lives and well-being of the people of all age groups the other barriers that have been faced by the nurses are lack of resources at hospital settings, limited equipment along with the overcapacity of the patients. These barriers hinder to achieve the goal of ending the preventable deaths of newborns and children. Not only this, there are also limited number of resources for the treatment of the new-born infants that are at risk. There is a goal that comes under goal 3 that focusing on increasing the health financing and recruitment and in achieving this the nurses faces challenges such as lack of resource materials, lack of training, lack of support for the learning needs of nurses in basic management and in innovative clinical skills, and lack of the retaining skilled neonatal nurses (Tomblin& Ross, 2015).

The first evidence based solution that could be applied within the goal context to nursing practice would be identification of the planetary health determinants and collaborating or partnering with the key stakeholders. Doing so would help in improving the likelihood of the good health and well-being for all (Rosa et al., 2019). The second evidence based solution would be interpreting the health ethics into the health policy. This could be done by educating the policy makers and the population of the general public about the planetary contemplations for good health and well-being along with this maintaining the professional standards that could lead to enhance the global scope of nursing practice would be helpful (Rosa et al., 2019).
