Description
During my transition period my main task was to understand the differences between my previous practice and new surgical ward. As I had to deal with a lot of different types of surgical wounds, I decided to reinforce my knowledge of the different types of dressing and protocols followed by the doctors and medical professional in the St. Andrews. From stiches, to changing the bandage, I made a note of all the methods and studied them. I learnt how to effectively clean the wound educate the patient about their wound and the correct finishing procedure so as to avoid any complications(Sofronas, 2018)
Feelings
The entire training programme was extremely helpful because no matter how much you observe, actually dressing the wounds is a completely different experience. It made me feel satisfied about my method and me the opportunity to enhance my skills. It also helped in building my confidence abut making the patient aware of their situation and increased my interpersonal communication skills. The difference between septic and aseptic techniques and the weight of this knowledge made me feel responsible when cleaning their wounds.
Evaluation
Wound healing prevention of infection and tissue viability were subjects that I learnt really well during this training period. I had a patient who had a severe wound in his foot and I had to change his vacuum dressings. The vacuum assisted drainage is extremely effective in surgically removing extra blood or fluid from a chronic wound operation site. I was enthralled by the sophistication of the entire procedure(Arash, 2017) The whole process can be extremely beneficial for healing too. It immensely helped my patient with all the pain.
Analysis
Wound management has really advanced. In the past if there was an infection near the wound operation site. It was mostly because of poor management or proper care. Most surgical wound can be taken care of without the possibility of any further complication. Even a time frame is decided for the same. But we can’t deny that each person ahs subjective healing capacities and various intrinsic and external factors can also influence the healing process. During my entire training process, I was sure to do frequent assessments and keep the patient alert so as to avoid these complications. This require giving them knowledge and being alert on my part. I also made sure that I was constantly following the principles of infection control(Yeom, 2017)
Action plan
The entire experience has been so educational and reformative that I have made this promise to myself that whenever I am presented with an opportunity to take new responsibilities, I will do so assertively. I have also decided to continue learning more about the various dressing techniques and educating myself through various workshops seminars and counselling sessions while working towards professional development.
Conclusion
Through this experience my expertise in clinical skill of wound management has improved. In the beginning I was afraid of making errors in sophisticated surgical procedures. But I am understanding the importance of learning new skills. This realization is immensely helpful and will guide all my future learnings.
