Introduction to Nursing Leadership

Registered nurses in the healthcare have a diverse role in maintaining patient safety and care (Spooner et al., 2016). These nurses are not only responsible for inclusive or patient centered care but they are also involved in active decision making and leadership. An active nursing leader performs a number of functions to enhance participation, encouragement, team work, ethical nursing practices, collaboration and cooperation in the nursing staff. Moreover, the nursing leaders are highly effective in improving the standard of care through efficient nursing interventions and follow up of ethical and legal standards of nursing care. Purpose of the assignment is to “analyze and critically discuss the responsibilities of a registered nurse in leading a team to ensure that the NSQHS standards are met throughout the clinical teaching when providing patient centered care”. The assignment will primarily discuss the transformational and democratic leadership style as effective nursing leadership styles while providing a rational to choosing these leadership styles for patient-centered teaching. Further, the assignment will discuss the roles and responsibilities of the registered nurse that lead to efficient and quality care to the patients. Further, the assignment will discuss the role modelling and teaching practices of a registered nurse in context to the NSQHS and registered nurse standards of practice.

Leadership Styles in Nursing

Transformational leadership style involve a nursing leader to consider every staff member as an important part of the process (Giddens, 2018). It involve the leaders to learn and acquire knowledge while motivating other staff members to learn new things in the healthcare. It is basically a theory that require the nurses to identify changes that are required in the teams and then create an appropriate vision in the team members to accomplish the desired goals (Liukka, Hupli & Turunen, 2018). The team leader is responsible for bringing up motivation, inspiration and commitment in the team members so that positive outcomes can be seen in the team. The leadership style is proved to be effective for the registered nurse as it helps them to identify the areas that require change and engage in practices that enhance self-practice as well as the practice of other staff members (Liukka, Hupli & Turunen, 2018). According to standard 3 of NMBA (2017), registered nurse standards of practice, a registered nurse must follow a lifelong approach toward professional learning of self as well as others in the healthcare. The transformational leadership style is thus an important leadership style for a registered nurse as it not only help a registered nurse to transform self-practice but also help her to motivate and inspire other staff members to acquire positive changes (Buil, Martínez & Matute, 2019).

According to Arman et al., (2017), the democratic leadership style is an important leadership style in which the team members are inspired to take a more participative role in the basic functioning of the healthcare. However, it has been stated that Günzel-Jensen, Jain and Kjeldsen (2018), democratic leadership style can be slow and inefficient in healthcare settings with larger teams. Although, Peker, Inandi and Giliç (2018), have stated that democratic leadership style can be applied to larger teams as well by appropriate strategies and education interventions. It is highly effective in improving patient outcomes and thus it can be applied by a registered nurse in her nursing practice. The democratic leadership style have an important role in team satisfaction. But, it can also lead to some conflicts and misunderstanding (Peker, Inandi & Giliç, 2018). So, nursing leaders that follows conflict resolving attitudes must follow democratic leadership style as their management and leadership attribute. Collaborative and cooperative activities in the healthcare setting have proved to be highly effective in improving patient outcomes and reducing nursing stress so democratic leadership style with equal involvement of the nurses can be beneficial for the healthcare staff (Arman et al., 2017).

RN Responsibilities in Quality Care

A registered nurse have an important role in leading the healthcare staff by enhancing cooperation, collaboration and active participation. According to Norful et al., (2017), registered nurses in a healthcare service have diverse roles and responsibilities. They have to manage a number of patients on a daily level while maintain their capability of practice. A registered nurse can be an effective nursing leader as they have skills and capabilities that are required to be an effective leader in healthcare (Josi & Bianchi, 2019). The registered nurses are expected to have technical knowledge while dealing with patients. Moreover, they are expected to show collaboration, cooperation and empathy toward the patients. However, it sometimes become difficult for a registered nurse to perform their roles and responsibilities effectively. Therefore, a registered nurse with leadership attributes is required in the healthcare. Registered nurse that have leadership skills perform the role of an educator, trainer, motivational speaker, coordinator and care provider (Josi & Bianchi, 2019). A nursing leader is expected to teach the healthcare staff about the importance of following nursing standards and guidelines in the healthcare.

According to Wholihan and Tilley (2016), nursing standards, protocols and guidelines are developed to provide a platform of ethical and legal practices for the nurses. Nursing leadership influence the nurses to provide patient-centered and effective care to the patients. According to (Hochman, 2017), patient centered care is the care provided as per the needs of the patients while maintaining respect, empathy and cooperation toward the patients. Registered nurses are involved in collaborative and cooperative practices that enhance patient participation in their own care (Hochman, 2017). The nursing leaders are responsible for monitoring the care provided to the patients. It must be the agenda of the registered nurses to provide safe and effective care to the patients with complete dedication and techniques. According to the clinical governance standard of the NSQHS standards ACSQHC (2017), the nursing leaders have responsibility of maintaining patient safety and care while concerning about patient-centered and effective care to the patients. It require the nursing leaders to ensure that every staff member govern their roles and responsibilities appropriately and provide maximum patient-centered results. Therefore, it is expected for a registered nurse as a healthcare leader to follow the clinical governance standard by NSQHS standards.

Teaching Implications in Clinical Context

It is important for a registered nurse to engage in the everlasting learning and teaching process in the healthcare department. A number of strategies and techniques are introduced every year in the healthcare setting. It is important for the registered nurse to have an ongoing and everlasting approach toward learning and teaching. It is important for the registered nurses to learn the new policies, guidelines and standards that are developed by the authority in order to promote patient-centered and effective care to the patients. The partnering with consumers standard from NSQHS ACSQHC (2017) standards, suggest the nursing leaders to have an approach of learning and teaching throughout their professional practice. The standard states that the healthcare leaders implement, develop and maintain system that can help them partner with the patients. These partnerships thus involve acute teaching and education to the patients in order to enhance their understanding toward the procedures used in the treatment plan.

According to Andersson, Salickiene and Rosengren (2016), it is important for an ethical nursing practice to involve the patients in their own care. This can be possible by proper education, awareness and teaching to the patients. According to the registered nurse standards for practice NMBA (2017), the standard 3 suggests the nurses to provide accurate and authentic information and education to the patients about their care and treatment to enhance their participation in the healthcare. In support to this Grobbel et al., (2019), have postulated that it is important for the registered nurses to understand the importance of patient-centered care and they are expected to undergo ethical practices while caring for patients. The nursing ethics suggests the nurses to exhibit respect, justice, beneficence and non-maleficence to the patients. Education and teaching to the patients about their treatment with proper respect to the needs and choices of the patients can certainly help the nurses impart greater patient safety.

The communicating for safety standard by NSQHS ACSQHC (2017), expect the registered nurse to maintain systems and processes that promote effective communication and interaction with the staff members, patients, care providers and families of the patients. In support to this Grobbel et al., (2019), have stated that nursing leaders must delegate in effective communication strategies in order to educate and teach the patients. Proper communication techniques that are not only respectful in nature but are also culturally appropriate can help a nursing leader to provide effective and considerate education to the nursing staff as well as the patients. However, Shah (2017) have stated that lack of communication ability can have negative impact over patient learning as it can bring up conflicts and misunderstandings. Setting up minimum standards of care for the patients while setting up communication protocols can promote easy processing’s in the multidisciplinary teams and hence it can enhance patient outcomes in the healthcare (François et al., 2017). Active communication is a key to basic understanding among the staff members as well as the nurses. Therefore, nursing leaders must focus on developing patient- centered and appropriate communication strategies in order to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction in the healthcare department.

Nurse as A Role Model and Team Leader

Role modelling has been considered as an important part of the nursing profession. The nurses uses steps of reflection and role modelling throughout their nursing career in order to gain optimum results and learnings in their nursing practice. It is important for the student nurses to learn about their career, common mistakes that happen in their career and the common learnings that can help them attain positive results. Role modelling is thus an effective technique to enhance learnings in the student nurses as they transition into registered nurses. An effective nursing leader can themselves act as role models for the student nurses. These nursing leaders can enhance the capability of practice of the students as well as the nursing staff. However, it has been said that negative role modelling can decrease the efficiency of the work in the nursing students. Negative role modelling can have a negative impact over the learnings of the nurses and hence it can reduce their efficiency as they transition into registered nurses (Chen et al., 2017). The nursing team leader should follow an authentic nursing leadership style in order to educate the students about the process of being an active and effective nursing leader in their future. Nurses must follow footsteps of effective nursing leaders in order to gain positive learnings from them. According to (), education and teaching in nurses can be bought up by proper role modeling and awareness about efficient nursing leaders. However, inefficient and poor efficiency of the nursing leaders can decrease their ability to perform during their clinical practice.

Conclusion on Nursing Leadership

In conclusion, it can be stated that nursing leaders are effective components of the healthcare system. The registered nurse can have an important role in educating the healthcare staff and patients while imparting patient centered efficient nursing care. The nurses can thus follow various leadership styles in order to be important and efficient nursing leaders. The transformational leadership style involve the nurses to transform themselves as well as other members of the staff with themselves in order to enhance their capability of practice as registered nurse. The democratic leadership style is another important nursing leadership style that influence a nurse to involve every team member in the decision making process of the healthcare. Both of these nursing leadership styles are highly conventional in nature and they can have positive impact over the roles and responsibilities of the nurses. Nursing leaders have acute role in patient learning, education, staff observation, and provision of patient-centered care. Provision of patient centered care is an important step of improving patient outcomes and hence it can lead to greater patient satisfaction and nursing results. Role modelling and nursing leadership can thus help the nurses to have positive mid frame while their transition as a registered nurse.
