Nurses are considered to be the central unit when it comes to modified health care sector as they are directly involved in patient care. Their action and clinical practise directly impact the health status of the patient thus they should follow the code of conduct and standard of practice (Lukewich et al., 2019). Reflection is considered to be one of the best methods to recollect the past incident and improve the working practises for future use (Koshy et al., 2017). The report will discuss the case study by considering different elements as per the STAR and it will also include the recommendation for future practice. The reflection will discuss the case scenario and relevant future practice that are relevant to the case.
During my clinical placement, it was my first day as a registered nurse and I was instructed to attend a patient admitted to the ward having issue of tiredness and increased urination. I was very nervous about how I will attend her as she belongs to the indigenous community. When I attended her I started the conversation by greeting her and then started the conversation concerning with her health. She was very stressed and feeling discomfort due to the different cultural belief and I was confused about how to calm her down. She was not able to understand what is was trying to ask due to the language barrier thus she was sitting silent and not responding to my any question.
I was instructed to gather all the relevant information about the client so that proper evaluation and treatment can be started. During the conversation, I faced many issue as she was reluctant to answer my questions that are necessary to understand her medical condition. Medical history is important while evaluating the patient health status but she was not ready to disclose any information regarding her family background and their health status. I need to conduct the ABCDE assessment to understand the different aspect that can contribute to deteriorated health status. When I asked her that I need to assess to understand the health status she was seem to be uncomfortable.
Communication is considered to be one of the major assets of the nurses as it helps to improve the information covey with the patient. Cultural competency during communication is important to help the patient to feel comfortable and express their issue. Nurses are expected to use a non-verbal mode of communication to improve the rapport with the client (Brooks et al., 2018). During the conversation, I utilized my interpersonal skills to improve communication by considering the cultural competency that helped to understand the issue she is facing.
Therapeutic communication is the only way of communication that can help to improve the understanding of the patient concerning the treatment process. Therapeutic communication is also important when it comes to conflict between the client and nurses thought process (Abdolrahimi et al., 2017). I tried to utilized therapeutic communication skills with conflict resolution skills to improve the understanding of the client concerning the importance of medical history during the patient care process.
Collaborating with the patient during the care process helps to improve the assessment process as the patient become more comfortable and participative in the care process. One of the collaboration techniques is the negotiation method that is used when there is disagreement from the client-side. Negotiations help to collaboratively come to a mutual decision while considering aspect from both the parties (Clay-Williams et al., 2018). I tried to negotiate with her and helped her to be comfortable in the environment so that the assessment process can be collaborative. She also participated during the assessment so that proper evaluation can be done that can speed up the treatment process.
The patient health status evaluation is one of the important aspects and treatment processes solely depend upon it. I tried to improve the communication with the client so that I can easily trace the issue that she is facing and to identify necessary treatment step that is required to improve health. I tried to make her comfortable and improve her understanding concerning the assessment process this helped her to easily discuss her family background and medical history. ABCDE assignment is considered to be important for patient assessment and thus I tried to make her understand the need for the assessment. This scenario helped to improve the conversations with the client that is necessary for the patient treatment process.
The scenario is helpful to understand that as a nurse i need to improve my communication and assessment process as per the client preferences. The client can easily express the issue if she/he is comfortable and I will try to improve the cultural competency during the client interaction. During the initial conversation, I was a bit confused regarding how to start the conversation but now I understand how to improve the interaction with the patient for my future practice. In future practice, I will try to help my colleagues to understand and improve the cultural competency in the care process to improve patient recovery. The nurse should follow the code of conduct and code of ethics as per the Nursing and Midwifery Board to improve the practice and justify the professional role. If I will encounter the same scenario in future I will try to improve the rapport with the client that is necessary for the care process. This scenario has helped me to improve my skills that can be used in future practice to improve clinical practice.
The case study improved the understanding regarding the importance of cultural competency in the nursing profession. Nurses are in direct contact with the patient and their action directly impacts the patient health status. Cultural competency is one of the important aspects while dealing with the indigenous population and thus nurse should work according to the patient cultural aspect. The learning from the case study can be utilized to improve future practice by improving clinical practice. Reflective learning helps the nurses to learn from their experience to improve their working style.
