Chadwick, A. amp Withnell, N. (2015) reviews about the administration as well as preparation of intramuscular injection. The main focus of this article is to educate every nurse regarding appropriate preparation as well as administration of an intramuscular injection. This is to make sure about the correct optimization of the injection technique and to have the latest recommendations for the same. Intramuscular injections are mainly recommended to the patients who are incapable of taking oral medications plus the patients who do not cooperate. The author reveals that nurses must be ensuring for accurate quantity of drug to be prepared by using accurate technique for administering accurate dose to the accurate patient.
It is very necessary to make sure that the dose which was previously used did not result in any reactions. The findings of this articles show that intramuscular injections include antibiotics, hormones, as well as vaccinations. It provides medications in a safe and effective way. Medicines get deposited deep into the muscle tissues with the help of an intramuscular injection. Such type of administration provides with immediate comeback of the medication as fibers of muscles are well defused. Themostcommonsitesforintramuscularinjectionsincludetheshoulderdeltoidmuscle, thethighsVastusLateralis, the Ventrogluteal, hips Dorsogluteal muscles or Gluteus Medius. The limitations of this article is to avoid the usage of intrmuscular injections for Dorsogluteal muscle of hip, as this particular area is associated with many risks which can result in hitting of blood vessel, nerve, or bone.
This article helped me in demonstrating the intramuscularmedicationpreparationas well as itsadministration. This also helped me in understanding the safe practices of needle which should be always enforced while using an Intramuscular injection.
Walsh, l. amp Brophy, k. (2011). Staff nurses sites of choice for administering intramuscular injections to adult patients in the acute care setting. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 67(5), 10341040. https//doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2648.2010.05527.xThis article examines about the staff nurses and their choices of site for administration of Intramuscular injections to adult patients for their acute care. This study is to determine if nurses are following the recent recommendations in nursing literature for having the correct usage of Intramuscular Injection. The main focus of this article is to determine the sites of an Intramuscular injection which are mostly used by nurses for performing acute care as well as the factors contributing to the selection of sites. The purpose of this article is to have precise knowledge about the medical literature, which involves some studies and surveys based on patients and their issues that appear while using Intramuscular injection. In this article the author reveals that Ventrogluteal site can be used for Intramuscular injection but the Dorsogluteal site must be avoided for these injections. However there is lack of evidence in this article for supporting this claim. As per the survey that was performed in this article, several nurses were accessed while performing acute care settings with the help of a database. 652 nurses had a questionnaire from which 264 nurses gave response rate of 422. The findings of this article showed that nurses mostly prefer using of the Dorsogluteal site over Ventrogluteal site. The choice of site varies according to age, preparation level, experiences in nursing and as per the knowledge of nerve. Several limitations have been observed from this study which included low response rate from the staff nurses during the questionnaire. Researches during annual professional licensure allowed for only those nurses who agreed for it and the rest of the nurses who did not agree, got eliminated which made the newly formed questionnaire based on self reporting. As per the recommendations made in this literature, nurses do not prefer to use the Ventrogluteal site for intramuscular injection to the adults. However, additional researches are required for safely performing Dorsogluteal site.
Ogston-Tuck, S.(2014). Intramuscular injection technique an evidence-based approach.Nursing Standard, 29(4), 52-59. DOI 10.7748/ns.29.4.52.e9183In this article the author explains about the meticulous and thorough approach towards assessment of patient and the injection technique used in intramuscular medication. It further reviews about the evidences that are based on safe practices while using intramuscular injection. The purpose of this article is to identify the significant points for practicing safe techniques of Intramuscular medication, which will be helpful for clinical decision making as well as for caring patient. The author provides a strong highlighting point from the debate in which choice of site in case of Intramuscular injection is critically argued mainly for the purpose of Ventrogluteal and Dorsogluteal muscles. The findings of this article explain that Dorsogluteal site involves risk which may result in Sciatic nerve injury as this particular site consist of major nerves as well as the blood vessels. However, there is lack of evidences that support the use of the Ventrogluteal site. Several limitations have been observed in this article which explains that if poor practices are performed while using intramuscular injection, then it may result in adverse reaction for the patient. Lack of knowledge and skills can lead to unnecessary complications. Erroneous injections can result in Sciatic nerve injury which may further lead to discomfort, morbidity and lasting disability.
This article helped me in gaining knowledge and skills that are very important to avoid complications and risk while using Intramuscular medication to patient. Nurses must be able to understand the anatomy which is relevant so that it can help them in identifying landmarks for safely and confidently performing medications. Proper knowledge and skills about the injection technique can help in avoiding complications as well as help the patient from experiencing pain.
