Introduction to Oncology Nurses

Oncology unit is the critical branch in any hospital setting. Oncology unit require a tremendous care and an effective health management strategies. Nurses specific to oncology domain are required to practice their knowledge, skills, and beliefs in variety of settings. An oncology nurses must be knowledgeable about the risk factors associated, preventive measures in response to risk, management, drug interactions, and recent research and development associated with the cancer.

This is because the fact that continue education and training among the registered nurses could act as a backbone toward patient safety, drug profile, safe administration of medicine, and proper care (Sharour, 2020). An oncology nurses must follow a good management practices while working with the patient. The oncology units faces a major clinical problems, and issue as cancer problem cannot be predicted. So, nurses should be adaptable to these situations, Nurse must be good problem solver, good situation handler, and hardworking. Along with this, oncology nurses must obey and follow the initial measure while chemotherapy as stop the drug infusion, withdrawing the infusion equipment, catheter equipment handling, proper holding of venous catheter and proper extraction of blood through the catheter. These are some small findings that must be obediently followed by the oncology nurses to make the patient output better (Sharour, 2020). 

The registered nurses should be proficient in his/her work. The proficient performer must be able to perceive the situation with help of senior person. The senior people are used to guide, monitor, and inspect the proficient performer in terms of health care, patient need, oncology therapy, and administration of drug. The registered oncology nurses must adopt the deep evidence-based and applied practical knowledge. They must consider the health resource proportionately and wisely to meet the needs of the cancer patient. They must also provide a reflective personality to articulate, discuss the other nurses about the principle of practice and experience. The oncology nurses must follow the professional, ethical, legal, social, and clinical responsibilities while dealing with the patient centric approach (Lavdaniti et al, 2015).. These require demonstration of the satisfactory knowledge base and practice accountability. The registered nurses must fulfill the interventions with respect to recognized standard of care, proper assessment & comprehensive approach, and also clarifies the aspects of care with the senior health professional (Nursing and midwifery). An oncology nurses should introduce and implement core competencies in the clinical practice. The competency of an oncology nurses include cancer pathophysiology, environmental influences, medical influences, risk associated, screening, diagnosis, surgical treatments, signs and symptoms management, interprofessional practice, and safe quality care to the patient (Sharour, 2020).

The oncology nurses must follow regular activities of cancer screening in patients. They must have the extreme knowledge of chemotherapy related-extravasations sign, definition, and symptoms. They should be very much aware of deficit sites, insertion sites, and cannula characteristics (Sharour, 2020). The above stated healthcare approach helps the nurses to transform from novice to expert professional. Generally, the experience, clinical practices, knowledge, open-mindedness, supportive, and patient standard care are the basic features that should be inner characteristics within the nurses and are responsible for the development of good professional identity. The qualities of nurses can be identifies and summarised to gather the health requirements of all the patients suffering from cancer according to age, and highlight, demonstrate the interventions for the effective patient recovery and optimal health condition. Planning, patient centric approach, professional experience helps the oncology nurses to follow the appropriate treatments or interventions to ensure better quality of life.

Oncology nurses always continue to evolve in response to recent advancement in terms of cancer treatment, novel information, and recent biotechnology development. Oncology nurses play a crucial role in the health care setting with respect to patient care, patient management, and patient treatment. Unfortunately, some time there maybe situation when sophisticated treatments, complex target therapies, and routinely cancer assessment may disturb the working of the nurses. This may cause a challenging situation to the registered nurses. But with the proper skills of problem solving, critical analysis, cognitive development, high level extensive knowledge, they can succeed in their carrier. Moreover, the oncology nurses must focus on the treatment and follow many aspects of care such as cancer education and prevention, cancer screening, nurses navigation, management, research, patient care, and able to respond to extreme and unique cases.
