To run an organization effectively leader utilize their powers so that the team can achieve the desired goals. Shenoy has described five powers that can have a positive or negative impact on the team. It has been observed that most of the organization leaders use legitimate power to get the work done. No doubt the legitimate power of the leader helps the team members to know at what task they are desired to work. But according to my analysis, it has a negative impact on the employees. A leader must use the reward, referent or expert power in the organization whereas he must try to avoid influencing team members by using legitimate or punishment power because these may have a negative impact on the people and organizational behavior. The performance of a project and likely hood of the project success increase when employees of the organization are willing to work exceptionally hard in their own expertise. I realized that Expert power radiates when a leader leads by an example to the others by utilizing his knowledge to administer all the team members of the organization. A leader can use more than one source of influence while leading a team to build trust, cultivate reliability and maintain consistency within the organization. Yes, influence and manipulation are two different terms often used in the organization. The major difference between the two is that a leader influences his or her team in a positive or a negative manner to accomplish the goals whereas manipulators often try to persuade team members for their selfish means.
