Post-traumatic stress disorder refers to the psychological condition in which an individual that goes through severe trauma or accident is affected psychologically. The presence of fear and anxiety may be present in such a situation. In conflict-stricken areas like Ukraine PTSD can have adverse impacts on children where it can lead to complete mistrust in adults and presence of fear will be evident. Children and adults with PTSD might appear normal otherwise, suffering only when the stressors and triggers of the aforementioned events come to the surface. Sleeping problems insomnia, loss of appetite, unusual aggressiveness are some of the symptoms.
Ukraine has seen poverty, unemployment, corruption and a complete lack of growth in all aspects. From veterans to children, the effect of the conflict can be seen in everyone. The children growing up in such environments are also extremely incapable of understanding the severity if situations and may behave in an unusual manner because they do not any different. The effects of PTSD are extremely varied and depend on different personality types. But the exposure to crimes and atrocities at an early age can play a very important role in determining the quality of emotional health in a child.
It has now been studied that almost one third of the population in children suffers from PTSD in any country that is war or conflict stricken. Their lives of violence, trauma and instability has and adverse effect on the ways in which they perceive reality and this may affect their personal behaviour and academic performance. Flashbacks, irritability, nightmares and feeling of isolation and loneliness is prevalent and in the case of children it becomes extremely difficult to determine the level of stress going through.
Displacement of residence and identity and the loss of a family member can be extremely traumatic events for children and sometimes their young minds may not be able to fully understand the effect of a situation. They might often adapt and react to situations in way that might be harmful or extremely introverted. Because the treatment of the mind and psychology is not a service that Ukrainians are used to, the analysis of such conditions becomes a difficult situation as the medical help facilitators cannot fully comprehend the level of help that a child requires. Understanding the degree of PTSD, whether it is severe or mild becomes extremely difficult. The effect of family dynamics on the child’s mental health is also something that cannot be determined accurately due to its variable and subjective nature.
Suicidal thoughts and complete disability to understand the severity of situation may often render young adults and children of Ukraine to choose a path of violence and crime where they will be worsening their situation and putting themselves at greater risk. What this means for the kids as they grow older and how will this affect the greater mental health of the entire economy is something that has to be paid attention to. Because the children of today are the future, what their minds are going through is of paramount importance and must be paid attention to. The country must understand and empathise with the mind of children and how trauma affects them.
