Personal Values and Beliefs

Professionalism refers to a complete set of skills and values that are required in any professional work may be medicines, corporate, or any other profession. Professionalism provides a comprehensive medical profession and its relation with health, medicine, and education (Vivanco & Bolton, 2015). I consider that the professional practice empower one to provide excellent evidence-based services to the patients. This helps to work collaboratively with caregivers, doctors, professors, and other health care providers. I personally feel that constructive feedback is an excellent tool for the growth and development. Due to the continuous feedback and hard-working, I got promotion in my organisation and also received the reward from my seniors and colleagues.

Thus, working with the other professionals help one to gain experience, learn new methods, and develop health care oriented work values. Technical expertise, ethics, skills, proper communications are essential components of professionalism in any organisation (Vivanco & Bolton, 2015). Moreover, in health care organisation, excellence, altruism, compassion, duty, accountability, respect, empathy, honour, integrity, and ethics are the parameters that linked with professional development of the registered nurse or the care provider (Vivanco & Bolton, 2015).I believe that professionalism introduces the new paradigm for the maintenance of professional performance that comprise of values, beliefs, professional skills, medical humanism and other practice concept. In the mental care, the registered nurse must use their professional attributes such as timely evaluation of mental health need of patients, developing and implementing treatment plans, providing and supporting psychotherapy services, establishing personnel care, good coordination with families, doctors, and other health professional, and proper medications administration (Johns Hopkins, 2018).

Personally, I believe that the working as a registered nurse in mental department, require evidenced based care in context with the patient care to achieve best healthcare outcome. The nurse power is a tool that helps in improving patient wellbeing and their overall outcome. The health care profession are aware of the influence of all sorts of contextual behaviour an also express the initial signs and symptoms (Glas, 2017).Institutional, legal, economic, administrative, and health rules and law are responsible for determining the professional identity (Glas, 2017). Because of these factors and in compliance with law, person can develop trust, mutual respect, interpersonal relationship, professional attitude and patient- centric approach.

Mental care is one of the complex cares that require stringent policies and behaviour. Mental nurse use their own philosophy of nursing and use their own beliefs and values to maintain the patient wellbeing. While dealing with mental patient, the registered nurse must perform a multi-professional, work as the person requires multiple treatment approach (Tanaka, 2018). I believe that the involvement and implementation of these professional insights help one to gain the successful clinical professional values. I think, with the help of these laws, beliefs, and standards, I had attained a professional attitude.

Professional Identity

I believe that professional identity is the way one react and experience in the working organisation. Professional identity is a reaction of one’s attitude, beliefs, and professionalism. This reaction can be negative or positive depending on person learning, knowledge and experience. Kabeel and Elisa (2017) opined those mental health nurses are the part of the multidisciplinary team that are especially relevant and have important role in management of mental illness. According to the paper, mental nurse’s professional identity is the subject of workshops, in-bound trainings, in-service programs, nursing knowledge, nursing care, and problem solving activates in the work organisation (Kabeel & Elisa, 2017).I believe that the job satisfaction and job profile also responsible for the development of professional identity. The job as a mental nurse was an opportunity for me to prove myself and develop a sense of belief within my team member, senior, and my colleague. This helped me to provide a patient centred care, adopt quick and spontaneous problem solving skill, fair patient treatment without discrimination, and contribute the best outcome.

According to Gimba & Sinegugu, (2015), professional identity develops through internalisation of personnel knowledge, skills, beliefs, values, standards, and experience. I also believe that the strong professional identity can be implemented through the harmony with the professional values and ethical codes. The ethical practices help one to work properly as in mental health care; we need to work in compliance with the mental health care standards (Gimba & Sinegugu, 2015).Thus, by following the standards, we can attain the experience and professionalism. According to the paper, nurses working in mental care settings are specialised in knowledge, education, experience, and professionalism that are required to provide a specific care in child and adolescent mental health specialist nursing (Rasmussen et al, 2017).

I believe that my professional identity has been achieved when I was promoted as the senior mental nurse and a supervisor after four years of my practice. This promotion is not only because of my hard work, my experience, and my self-confidence but also because of my seniors, leaders and my health professionals. With the tremendous support of these people, I could not have been achieved this position. All of them are confident in me that I can support the position and will work hard. I think due to my attitudes, beliefs, and my way of professionalism, my senior has supported me and promoted me. It is my understanding that the values and beliefs of nurses generally arise from hardworking and the passion to improve the outcomes for others. Haghihat et al (2019) has done the study in relation to professionalism. They found that change in nursing students, training, and enhancement of their knowledge play a significant role in professional development. To develop the professional identity, one should be respected, and their status must be improved according to their activities and working. The author has also found that the professional independence has a positive impact on the development of professional identity of the registered nurse (Haghihat, 2019).Thus, these principles determine that the professional identity is gained in the healthcare organisation through proper training, experience, adopting health care standards, and maintaining work. Thus, the registered nurse are solely responsible for their work to maintain the health of the patient and provide him/her a positive care recover fast without the motive of personal gain and any reward in return.

Statement of Professional Philosophy

The registered nurse and other medical practitioner have the lifesaving and health maintaining personality. They work day and night to save the lives of the public and achieve good level of health for the patients and public. The personnel and professional characteristics of nursing are multi-faceted. The registered nurse are guided by medical code of conduct, ethical code of conduct and professional code of conduct to work within the organisation scope (NMBA, 2017). The motive of health care professional is to take care of their patient, spread awareness, and share their knowledge and skills to save the life of the people. In the hospital or the health care setting, all the professional team need to support each other socially, mentally, and medically to ensure the delivery of quality health to patient. The team members comprise of doctors, nurse, senior nurse, registered nurse, and health care providers. The motive of everyone is to provide the quality care and need to work together.

As the senior health care nurse and a supervisor of the mental health care department, I believe that I am in a position to influence the workplace, its culture, standards, and code of work in relation to encourage the safety standards and health care standards. For this, I must ensure that every registered mental nurse must obey the working standards and provide the special training to their juniors so that they must know the little and basic concept of health. In mental ward, there is need for advanced practice psychiatric nursing care with the scope of practice of other health care providers. This requires a distinct professional identity including bio psychosocial perspectives, importance of healing relationships, and also the knowledge of symptoms associated with the patient management and self-care (Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing, 2015). Moreover, in the mental health care approach, the students develop the clinical experiences on the complex patient and system problems (Tanaka, 2018). The young students involve in mental care require academic exposure with the multiple theoretical perspectives and scientific knowledge.

Thus, mental register nurse require technical, personal, inter-relational assistance, ethical, and harmonization knowledge to deal properly with the patient suffering with mental disorder. Additionally, the registered nurse must also know interpersonal relationship to create the bonds with the patient and family. These are because the mental care is connected with the patient, family, and nurse. The nurses are required to provide emotional, medical, and healthcare support to patient and family.
