Significance of Developing a Professional Portfolio in Nursing in Healthcare

Portfolio can be considered as a changing set of records that reflects my accomplishments, attributes, experiences, skills and other aspects of expertise. A portfolio will also include some samples of the best works done by me along with my values, experiences and achievements. The personal information that I have put on the portfolio are likely to reflect my personal abilities and personality characteristics and I believe that it is an useful tool through which I can market my abilities to the employers of healthcare organizations and others. As per the views of Casey et al. 2017), portfolio allows a person to be creative in presenting own skills and qualifications so that the unique and effective professional capabilities can catch the attention of the employers. I think portfolio is significant for all professionals as it allows a person for discovering self and developing confidence upon oneself. Portfolio also allows organizing the goals, aims, aspirations, accomplishments and other which helps in showcasing the personal characteristics to the intended employers. A portfolio is not a mere collection of information regarding personal abilities it can also be presented as a tangible tool that provides evidence against the skills and competence I have.

A professional portfolio is one that demonstrates skills, backgrounds, accomplishments and experiences I have gathered. The most interesting side of a portfolio is, it can be developed as per the personal creative and innovative preferences of a person. A nursing portfolio would include the specific skills and competencies I have within me for working effectively in my role as a registered nurse which help me to convey my appropriateness to the roles and responsibilities. There are a number of documents that a portfolio includes letter of reference. It is helpful for showing the employers previous conducts and appreciation earned through working. It also includes my curriculum vitae through which my professional objectives, personal interests and others aspects can be presented to the employers. Transcripts are also included into a professional portfolio in order to demonstrate the opinions of others about my skills and competencies and characteristics as an individual (Pennbrant & Nunstedt, 2017).

Statement of Intent

My portfolio will include my nursing license that would demonstrate my nursing authorization. This is very important as expertise in nursing is an essential qualification for handling care users. As per the views of St-Germain et al. (2019), a portfolio depicts the skills, competencies, experiences and expertise that develop a map of the achievements of an individual. It would also consist of letter of recommendation that would give emphasis upon my competence so that potential employers may readily accept me in the role of a nurse. As I am aiming at working as a registered nurse I also aim to include a copy of recognition from my coworkers. I have decided to gain certificates for palliative care and child care. These certificates will also be included in the portfolio so that my area of expertise can be made clear to the employers. A collegiate writing sample would also be included in the portfolio. I would also add evidence on my tenure of involvement with any for hospital for working in the role of a nurse.

A thank you note is also aimed to be included in my portfolio. It is not only for attracting the potential employers but also to develop my confidence for accomplishing nursing responsibilities (Mohammed & Hassane El-sol, 2018). I would also include a transcript from the nursing school and the copies of evaluation. This will include the qualifications I have gained for practicing as a nurse.
