Leadership and Effecting Change in Public Health

Working with a group of individuals can often lead to interesting insights and self-assessments regarding various aspects of oneself. In this essay I will be reflecting upon my experience of working with my other team members during the group presentation and the lessons I learnt about my personal leadership style during the class lessons that I attended in this course.

I greatly enjoyed researching about and finally preparing the group presentation. More than anything, this project was greatly informative about all the mental health and physical health related issues that our society is facing. With the help of this project, I was able to be innovative and think of the various solutions that exist to such problems. When I was working on the presentation with my team, I was able to think more broadly and present my ideas in a systematic manner in front of my team. They listened to my ideas and shared their own; and we, as a team, were able to have an insightful discussion about the topic in hand. According to Deering (2020), one of the top qualities in a good team is good communication with each other. Apart from that, my team and I were also able to calmly solve any conflicts that arised during the project. This is also where I realized that I was very efficient with conflict management and usually took charge when any major or minor conflict arised in the group. Using the principles of collaboration, compromising and competing (Amaresan, 2020), I was able to solve and avoid many conflicts within the team. Apart from that, the team and I performed a lot of research in order to come up with innovative and easy-to-implement changes that can be employed in the cities.

My contribution to the presentation involved not only conflict management and research, but also helping design the presentation. I acknowledged the fact that along with presenting all the facts and proposed changes, the presentation also has to be attractive, efficient and easy to understand. Keeping this in mind, I tried to make the presentation as attractive as possible. I used a big font, attractive slides, and information in the form of bullet points to made it easier to understand. I thought from the audience’s point of view and made the presentation accordingly. My team was very supportive of my ideas and thus, along with their inputs and support, the entire team was able to make a meaningful presentation.

While working with the team, apart from learning that I held good conflict management skills, I also learnt that my communication skills were really powerful. While working with the team, not only was I able to efficiently present the ideas that were in my head but was also a keen listener and tried understanding everything that my team mates were saying. I tried to make sure that everyone was able to speak their mind and felt included in the team. It is a known fact that active listening helps recognize other people’s perspectives and helps us appreciates their presence (Vantage Circle, 2020). I tried to be an active listener at all times and provided immediate feedback on the ideas. Along with me, my team was also very supportive and coordinative. We all know that there is no “I” in teamwork, and a good presentation was an outcome of the contribution of each and every group member.

While working in the team, I was also able to improve my leadership and collaboration skills. I usually identify myself as a sole worker and thus, working with a set of people was really refreshing for me. I was able to communicate with my team mates, get various insights from different perspectives and thus look at the same problem from a different set of eyes, get work done way faster and have a lot of fun while doing so. My leadership skills are not very developed and thus, via this presentation, I was able to gain insights and learn more about leadership and team management. I witnessed a few of my other team mates taking charge of different situations and managing them in their own specific way. I realized that every manager has a different management style. My own style is very collaborative in nature (Tutorials Point, 2020). Understanding the management style that I am most comfortable with will undoubtedly help me in improving upon it and learning more about it in the future.

The theoretical lectures that I have attended in this class have also helped me gain a lot of knowledge about the same. The various concepts that were taught to us about team management and work efficiency, when applied and witnessed in real life, have helped me understand the pros and cons of my own behavior in a work environment.

When I assess my progress on the question “how ready are you to assume a leadership role?”, I will say that I am almost ready. According to Matta (2019), when one is about to assume a leadership role they should have the knowledge, have a leadership style that works for them and have the ability to see a bigger picture. While I have gained sufficient knowledge about my working style and management style, I believe that there is a scope for improvement in my ability to see the bigger picture. I have to develop my abilities to understand the consequences of my actions and decisions and foresee how they affect not only me but the other employees and the organization as a whole. Once I gain a little more understanding about the same, I think I will be perfectly ready for a leadership role.

Every assignment I have done has added a little more to my understanding about myself and I believe that all of it will be applicable in the work experience that I gain in the future. I have greatly enjoyed not only working on the presentation but also reflecting upon the same, and assessing myself based on it.
