Abstract on Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

The main purpose of this report to providing a significant understanding of how to manage change and innovation of a company. Qantas Airways have been selected to conduct the study in the perspective of a company's business consultant. Amid global pandemic of coronavirus, the airline industry has faced massive financial loss that has affected their business drastically. Similarly, Qanats Airways have faced several challenges during the coronavirus crisis. The findings of the study suggest that to manage the change of Qantas Airways that it faced amidst the coronavirus pandemic, applying theoretical knowledge can help the organization to solve the challenges effectively. Implementing the recommended strategies will give significant assistance to recover the loss and retain its organizational effectiveness successfully. Organizations like Qantas Airways must be flexible towards change, as it is uncertain to face any crisis or challenge. Thus, this report will help analyze how Qantas Airways manage change and innovation effectively to ensure effectiveness.

Introduction to Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

Qantas Airways has been recognized as a leading airline service provides in Australia and is certified as 4-star rating as per its airport quality and onboarding product and services offered by its employees (Qantas Airways, 2020). It is a privately held company with the largest fleet size, international destinations, and flights. The company was founded in 1920, thus, considered as the oldest airline service in the world. Besides that, the giant organization is flexible towards changes and innovation effectively to bring effectiveness and efficiencies within the company (Qantas Airways, 2020). Thus, this report will help analyze how Qantas Airways manage change and innovation effectively to ensure effectiveness.

Literature Review of Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

There are several pieces of literature available concerning managing change and innovation, providing effectual evidence and research to source related information for future study associated with the topic. According to a study by Puhan, (2019), stated that innovation and radical change are essential for today’s business organization to keep with the pace of high competition (Puhan, 2019). Companies must be flexible towards effectual changes and adopt innovation to ensure organizational effectiveness and capable of leading in the competitive market. The study reveals that working culture is a key element that drives change and innovation management. An effective organizational culture is vital for fruitful change and innovation (Puhan, 2019). In another research study by Hussain et al., (2018), the theory of Kurt Lewin’s change model has been stated and signified as an effectual tool for managing organizational change and innovation. According to Lewin’s change model, it includes three stages: unfreeze, change, and refreeze (Hussain et al., 2018). Overall, it indicates about the relationship amongst leader and employees involving in the organizational change by mutual contribution. The article is about a critical review of theories of change and the diverse stages of organizational change (Hussain et al., 2018). Thus, a change model is effective in managing an organizational change that helps improve business.

Discussion on Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

Amid a global pandemic of coronavirus, the airline industry has faced massive financial loss that has affected their business drastically. Similarly, Qanats Airways have faced several challenges during the coronavirus crisis. The company has to lay off 20,000 workers temporarily to recover the loss. According to the news report by BBC News, (2020), the company has reported an annual loss of more than £1bn which occurred to the global coronavirus pandemic (BBC News, 2020). It has also been reported by company executives that, the two-thirds of its redundancies will be complement by the end of September 2020 (BBC News, 2020). This happened due to border restrictions by countries across the world to stop virus contamination. However, by looking at the consequences of the company, the management has bound to decide on laying off its employees temporarily (BBC News, 2020). The company is facing massive issues and challenges in coping with the financial crisis and loss. During such emergency or global crisis, it is difficult to make strategic decisions to overcome the challenges and solving issues. Thus, this indicates that there is an immense need for organizational change and innovation within the company to bring back effectiveness and retain its profitability efficiently. and once they bounce back to normal business, the company would absorb its employees back to the workplace.

Recommendations on Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

Based on the identified issues and challenges of the company faced during the global epidemic of coronavirus, it is recommended for the company to adopt the change model of Kurt Lewin’s change model to manage its organizational change effectively. Besides, as the company has laid off its employees temporarily, once they bounce back to normal business, the company should absorb its employees back to the workplace to handle the workload effectively. Moreover, the company must increase its online bookings and queries activities more than offline as it is expected a sharp and rapid rise in business after restrictions been removed.

Self-Reflection

In the business environment, there are always an abundance of factors that can be learned and experience as the area is vast. Being a business consultant, it has been a productive and learning experience about end number of aspects involved in identifying key issues and challenges; and look for solutions to overcome those. By analyzing the key issues and challenges of managing change and innovation in the allotted company; Qantas Airways, it has provided me with a significant learning experience regarding various factors that are important to bear in mind while managing an organizational change.

As per the case of Qantas Airways, I have understood that an effective working culture with equal involvement and participation helps the overall company to manage and bring the change effectively. Similarly, as the decision of Qantas Airways to lay off its employee temporarily is the indication of strong organizational culture among them to accept the decision and wait for the business to return in the normal state to re-employ them and recover the incurred loss. I have had a little knowledge about organization change which I have gathered by reading books, journals, and magazines. But after doing this research report being a business consultant for Qantas Airways, my knowledge and information have increased three times more as compared to theoretical knowledge. This indicates that my practical knowledge has been expanded by undertaking the task of identifying managing change and innovation of Qantas Airways.

I had always overlooked the importance of practical learning over theoretical learning. I used to think that by reading and studying journal articles and books alone can make my knowledge and expert on the subject of organizational change and innovation. But after having the experience of working as a business consultant for a real-life company has changed by perception positively and now, I give the utmost importance to practical learning more.

Conclusion on Qantas Airways Ltd. Analysis

Organizational change and innovation are crucial to increase organizational effectiveness and it plays a key role in solving critical challenges and issues effectively. Qantas Airways has been a live example to understand how the company may face a sudden business crisis and look for ways to solve the issue efficiently. The findings of the study suggest that to manage the change of Qantas Airways that it faced amidst the coronavirus pandemic, applying theoretical knowledge can help the organization to solve the challenges effectively. Thus, implementing the recommended strategies will give significant assistance to recover the loss and retain its organizational effectiveness successfully.
