Leadership is one of the most important characteristics that must be acquired by the manager in order to smoothly run the working of the organization. However, in the field of healthcare leadership is very important because it acts as a change agent and promoting patient-centric care. Challenges for leaders in Healthcare

Leadership is one of the most difficult roles as it comprises of big characters and responsibilities. It has been noted that leadership is one of the most discussed and least understood concepts in management literature. However, in the field of the healthcare sector, services played a very important role in order to satisfy the needs of the patient. Therefore, proper management needs to be accomplished and for that leaders and managers played a very important role (Sfantou, et al. 2017). The healthcare system needs well trained and skilled leaders to order to plan any potential problem and accomplished the organization. It becomes very difficult for leaders to understand the present requirement of the organization. However, the most complex issue that leaders face is the cost-effective program and maintain the effective operation and services in the organization. Challenges faced by the leaders in Healthcare are as follows

Workforce shortage

Presently in the healthcare industry, it has been noted that the industry is facing a shortage of skilled and qualified workers. The labour market is quietly low in providing skilled and qualified workers to the hospital. The shortage is majorly in the occupation of nursing, assistant, technician, pharmacist nurses etc. However, the graduation rate of the student is slightly high but the shortage of skilled and qualified structure remains constant for the industry. The graduation students were not able to meet the rising demand of the industry. Therefore, it is very difficult for leaders to manage the employee shortage issue (Harrison et al. 2019). The leaders need to find the right candidate for the job however large numbers of students were unable to meet the demand of the job. The labour market is vital for health care leaders because the right talent can only be found from the labour market. The shortage of right candidate will raise the labour cost without negatively impacting the business. Due to shortage of staff, the leaders need to rise and help their team effectively and navigate the challenging times. However, the work for shortage will highly impact industry growth and affect the caused due to the competitive labour market. Therefore, a shortage of workforce is the biggest challenge for the leaders and there are various steps that the organization needs to adopt in order to avoid this gap.

Healthcare Rising Cost

Strive to live longer, healthier and more active lifestyle healthcare concerns increases and so does the cost. It has been noted that health care costs and funding of arises at a rate exceeding inflation and is expected to increase in the future. That it becomes a challenge for the leaders to manage the costing as well as providing the services within affordable range (Khoshhal and Guraya 2016). Leaders need to manage the rising cost and also understand the annual increase in the Gross Domestic Product. However, the organization also needs to concern for the cost in order to deliver the best services to the customer and also retain employees. Employee retention is very important in the healthcare sector as various factors affect the employed retention in healthcare. The rising demand for labour in the industry is quietly high and quality and skilled labour is demanded by the organization. Therefore the employees that are skilled and qualified in the organization the firm needs to invest a lot in employee retention. Leaders need to find an alternative solution or to combat the rising cost of care (Novak and Djordjevic 2019). The organization is to think about the alternative option and the leaders need to manage the costing of the organization that can manage the employee retention and fulfil the needs and demand of the patient.

Medical and Technological Advancement

In the present era of globalization medicine and technological advancement is the biggest challenge for the organization. It is an emerging opportunity for the organization also. The present health organization is facing physician shortages and need a low-cost alternative to the office visit and inpatient care. The medicinal and technological advancement may lead to a shift from traditional visits to pre-screening in favours of favourable as well as virtual doctor-patient interaction. This may lead to impact the economic state of the hospital management and it is the most difficult process for the leaders to manage the costing (Robbins and Davidhizar 2020). The medical instrument and the technologies are very costly and the organization needs to adopt those technologies in order to provide services to the patient. However, the training is also given by the organization regarding these technologies so that the staff can get comfortable with the machine and easily uses. Therefore medical and technology advancement is an opportunity as well as challenges for the organization in order to provide the best solution to the customer. However, the data storage is one of the most difficult tasks for the leaders as managing data of each patient. It is a very risky process and rapid advancement in clinical technology increases the cost of data storage therefore leaders need to take innovative ways to manage and stored information adequately.

Changing Expectations

It has been noticed that the expectation of patient changes from time to time from an organization. Therefore the organization needs to fulfil requirements of the patient as per their needs. In the field of the health sector, the patient’s satisfaction is most important however some issues arise in the satisfaction of the patient. A person-centred approach is a very difficult approach that the organization needs to adopt. However, due to lack of availability of staff, the person-centric approach could not be possible for every patient in the hospital and sometimes patients were not satisfied with the services (Braithwaite et al. 2017). Leaders and managers also need to retain the employees because the shortage of employees is already the biggest problem for the healthcare sector therefore to retain employees organization needs to take strict actions to retain them. Apart from this, cost also impacts the patient treatment because in private hospitals the person can take up this and it is possible because the costing is quietly high as compared to government hospitals. Therefore the organization needs to provide the best services without giving a person-centred approach to the patients. Organization leaders and manager needs to appraise the employee salaries time by time so that the employees do not leave their jobs and deliver their services with best results.

How to Meet Future Challenges

In order to eradicate the issue of workforce shortage, the organization needs to train their employees and retain their employees very well. Employee retention is very important for the organization to manage the employee shortage in the organization. However, the organization can also eradicate this issue by focusing on providing technical sessions and training to the employees. If an organization gives training to the employees then they will be skilled and perform their work very well. However, the organization should also organize internship programs for that the quality of staff or the participant that has the potential to perform under pressure in the hospital can be selected (Mannion and Davies 2018). This internship program not only helps the organization but also helps the individual to better understand the demand of the association and acquire the skills that are needed in administration. Apart from this organization should also collaborate with different recruitment association so that the skilled staff and skill participant can be selected for the organization services. If the staff is not skilled so that organization can organize training sessions for the participants.

In order to eradicate the issue of rising cost organization needs to manage the requirement from the patient as well as from the organization. The leaders need to finalize a proper budget with the management team and take accurate actions that lead to employee satisfaction as well as customer satisfaction (Merlino 2017). Apart from this, the essential step for the organization is to consult with the management team as well as the staff to take proper action and take advice from them so that the steps that organization is missing in delivering services will be eradicated. Organization leads to make proper planning for the budget required for answering services and also for employee engagement.

In order to eradicate the challenge to manage the medical and technological advancement organization needs to only adopt those equipment’s that are important for the organization services. It is very important to take a proper meeting with the employees and ask them about the equipment that is required for the organization. After the approval from the employees, the organization need to adopt those technologies that are important for the organization in the present situation. The organization needs to understand the demand and the supply of equipment and also manage the maintenance of the equipment (Melnyk et al. 2016). Leaders need to train their employee so that they can easily handle the equipment that is new and make them applicable in the organization. Leaders need to adopt the democratic style in order to get interacted with the employees so that the employee's opinion will also be considered in any final decision-making process. The management of the organization can only be run if the employees are satisfied with the job and the decisions are made under the employee's choices.

In order to eradicate the challenge of managing the changing expectation from the employees as well as the patient, leaders need to take the following actions. Firstly the organization needs to understand the opinion of the employees in terms of providing services to be patient. A leader needs to be interactive with the employees so that the requirement that they want in the system will be fulfilled and they can provide the best services to the patient (Al-Hussami et al. 2017). The organization should also conduct a survey time per time so that the requirement of the patient will be fulfilled and the patients will be satisfied with the services of the organization. Leaders need to be very productive in order to eradicate this issue because leaders and their leadership style impact the employee's satisfaction level as well as patient satisfaction level.

Impact on Team Effectiveness

Effectiveness is the capacity of a group individual that has to accomplish their own goals as well as the shared objective. Team effectiveness can be influenced by the clarity of roles and responsibilities, discussing levels that are enabled in the decision-making process and conflict resolution process, social processes and interaction among group members, resource constant and access etc. The following challenges can impact team effectiveness as it may lead to a division of objective from the employee’s point of view. If the employee shortage is continuing in the organization then it may affect the performance of the team and the management will be disturbed (Strömgren et al. 2017). Effectiveness is referred to as the capacity that is required in order to accomplish the goals of objective administered by authorized personnel. Different types of the team need to be organized in the organization in order to accomplish a specific goal of the organization. However, in terms of healthcare association, the team that is organized to complete the defined goal is the nursing team or other team leads. Organization leads to make different team leader for the specific team and analyze the performance of each team and find the gap that has occurred in the working. This helps the organization to identify the gap that patients observe in the services. This solution helps to eradicate the challenges in the dissatisfaction of the employees from their organization services. Apart from this, today leaders need to be very productive and interactive with the fellow member so that the working and the performance of the organization will be better and enhanced. Leaders and managers need to actions that fulfil the needs of the employees as well as the customer. In the healthcare sector, democratic style is very effective in maintaining a relationship with the employees as well as the customer.
