Health is extremely crucial determinant for survival and it depends on a number of factors like good environment, shelter, access to basic medical facilities, following proper dietary patterns, and sanitization. Unfortunately, aboriginal and Torres strait islander people are not provided these basic facilities due to numerous social determinants thus leading to poor health (Moodie, et al., 2019). This reflective will highlight a social determinant that acted as a barrier for people to achieve good health standards and the changes brought by a leader in improving the health outcomes for these people.

Poor Housing and Its Impact on The People of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island

Good health is one of the fundamental necessities required by every person. Housing is one such social determinant that causes a number of challenges for original and Torres strait islander people. The inadequacy of houses in remote and rural communities are responsible for various health issues among these people. The indigenous people let the recognition of people property rights and are unaware about their rights and forced with the idea of private property doesn't belong to them. The availability of housing with all the basic services can have health impacts directly and indirectly (Bailie, & Wayte, 2006). The population of aboriginal children are the main victims of infectious and contagious ailments caused due to insufficient water supply.

Apart from this, limited facilities for washing clothes due to which the aboriginal and Torres strait islander people were forced to wash their clothes in dirty water and bathing with the same. Lack of housing results in overcrowding that facilitates in spreading infections and chronic diseases resulting in poor development and progress of people. Low sanitization doesn't allow quick recovery due to which people have low immunity. Poor standards of infrastructure of houses doesn't provide a safe and clean water supply for various household activities which is one of the main factors in poor health (Anderson, et al., 2016). There is no proper structure for the sewer system due to which the drainage systems are mostly open that has a huge impact on the living standards and health status of residents of Torres strait Island.

Role of Stan Grant

Stan Grant is a journalist who has worked for various television news channels and written a number of best selling books in the nonfiction genre. He is also a famous filmmaker. In his book "Tears Of Strangers: A Family Memoir", he has highlighted the problems and life difficulties that are faced by a body and Torres strait islander people (Lam & Guillaume, 2018). He has shown conditions and challenges faced by these people in their daily lives and made their voices heard by publishing numerous articles and books on their lifestyles and social determinants that act as barriers for them.

He has faced poverty in childhood where he did not have consistent schooling and no permanent house. This is one of the reasons that he was able to understand the pain of aboriginal and Torres strait islander people living in overcrowded houses with no basic facilities and poor infrastructures. He was a true supporter and helped them in raising their voice and understanding their rights for private property. He acted as a bridge between these people and the government in order to provide them with the fundamental health facilities and residential areas so that they can live a decent life. He became their voice through his pen and therefore helped in improving their health outcomes by making a change in their surrounding and living style through his job.

Providing Them Cultural Safe Care

It is very important to provide cultural safety and respect to indigenous people. As a registered nurse or midwife, I can utilise a variety of methods to ensure culturally safe care to abort journal and Taurus treat Island patients so that they can have better and healthy life. The ways that I will adopt to provide cultural safecare to these people are listed below:

  1. I will engage with all these people as individuals in a very familiar and respectful way keeping in mind their privacy so that they can form closer and stronger bonds with me (Cooper, et al. 2019). In addition, I will possess extreme professional relationships in a compassionate manner.

  2. I will work in partnership with aboriginal and Torres strait islander people in order to contribute to the best potential outcomes for the person I would be caring for. Along with working on the physical health of the patient, I would take utmost care of their mental wellness.

  3. I will work according to the cultural safety guidelines and represent my behaviour according to the expectations of the patients and their families to provide a culturally safe health system. However, I will also reflect my own assumptions and culture in order to develop a genuine partnership with the patients.


Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people are facing a number of social determinants and housing is one of them. Residing in a poor quality, insufficient, unaffordable and insecure housing can be directly associated with poor health standards. This all leads to stress evolving from lack of residential areas, overcrowding which causes adverse impact on health (Fredricks, et al. 2020). There are several change leaders who worked in supporting these people and have helped them to overcome this issue up to some extent.
