Role of Nurse in Healthcare

The process of patient care and coordination management is an ever changing dynamic. The modern day medicine can be practiced with the help of interpersonal skills amongst various healthcare professionals. This is imperative from the point of view of providing the patient with the customized care plan as per their individual needs and requirements. The nurse can be seen playing a role of a liaison as well as a leader, directing and coordinating the healthcare team, by keeping them in a close loop and well informed as well. They are also a core ingredient of the multidisciplinary team, connecting the healthcare professionals involved in the process by continuing the healthcare delivery to the patient. There are multiple levels and designations defined in a composite healthcare team. The expertise of each of these individuals are to be taken into consideration as they all play a key role in patient care. The leader of the team is usually defined beforehand in order to avoid confusion. In modern day clinical practice, each team member can be observed as surfacing up as a leader in the process (Shah, 2017). The authoritarian figure can however be maintained by anyone in the management chain, the decision-making power in a given scenario, lies with every individual working with the team. In the end the team has to work in collaboration with each other, putting aside their differences, as the patients are the main area to be focused upon (Elwyn, 2017). This will also help in reflecting back a picture comprising of team work, high professionalism, as well as well managed clinical governance in the process. The leader ship qualities can be found in any member of the team, but a true leader is supposed to be a motivator as well.

Nurse’s job profile is very hectic and at times they are not that appreciated for the work they perform round the clock. This might in still negativity in an individual and might pose a hindrance in them being able to perform in the full capacity. Job appreciation is very necessary for maintaining a consistency in work deliver (Stegen, 2018). Studies have shown that nurses who have been appreciated for their actions and skilled approaches, have been able to attain better decision-making as well as make sound clinical judgment, most apt for the patient. Nurses who are supported and appreciated by their senior counterparts have also been seen as having higher management level as well as greater job capacity. The increased support encourages the individual to perform far and beyond in their jobs and thus, benefiting both the professional in terms of job satisfaction and patients in terms of improved healthcare outcomes.

While nurses are usually observed to be promoted at a higher level, not all of them might have a chance to achieve these heights. It is therefore, important to note that one at a time, each individual should be able to have this kind of opportunity in life. This will not only help in maintaining their work graph at a peak but will also help in improving patient’s outcomes through higher rate of job satisfaction. The leadership should also be analyzed from time and on, for positive and negative inclinations. A leader having a positive inclination and attitude will be able to help with the patients as well as will be able to keep his staff focused and motivated. He will also possess for a better clinical judgment. On the contrary, a leader having a negative inclination and attitude is neither fit for their team nor for the patient as well (O’Connor, 2016). They might tend to push their staff with work, far and beyond the scope of their capacity and thus, adding in the ongoing burden. Moreover, they might also not be appreciative of the fact as to how well the staff members might be working and thus, lowering the levels of job satisfaction amongst the staff appointed there.

The modern time are observing more effective patient care and management. This is due to the effectiveness of the various healthcare professionals working in close coordination with each other. The main factor that precipitates as the main reason for enabling so, is the practice of effective communication amongst the team members (Blake, 2019). It is crucial for care management as it will help in providing the patients with the care that is decided upon in uniformity amongst all of the team members. A combined decision-making is also effective from the point of view of managing the care for the patients in the best optimal manner possible. This will be helpful in establishing positive reinforcement in the nurses, as they will see themselves as an integral part of the team. This will be beneficial for the patient population as well, as it will help in reducing the commonly occurring errors in the healthcare settings, while provided coordinated care to the patients (Lewis, 2016).

In order to ensure success, the help of continuous training programs can also be taken in the process. There are some nurse professionals who will be well-versed with the subject matter.

They can be helpful by becoming a part of teaching process, where they can guide the new joiners on various tacts and techniques in order to manage the care in a more swift and effective manner. The young counterparts can learn from their seniors and can also take guidance from time to time so as to provide the patient with the best possible healthcare solution (D’Ambruoso, 2016). Through the means of enhanced communication patterns as observed here, the understanding of the roles of the individuals within the team can be defined in an apt manner. This is crucial to prevent any miscommunication and management of task in a more efficient manner, ultimately resulting in improved healthcare outcomes in the patient.

Professionalism is another trait that is to be maintained by the nursing personals at all times. It also ensures that care to the patient is given in a sound and safe manner. High degree of display of professionalism shows that not only the patient as an individual, but their own cultural values, belief and ethical issues are also being given utter importance at the same time (Bussard, 2019). This is also important from the point of view of gaining patient’s respect and confidence and thus, enabling in establishing a trust worthy environment between the patient and the nurses. This will also ensure prevalence of culturally safe practice while tending care to the patient.

Nursing profession comes with a diverse roles and responsibilities. They are the front line managers providing are to the patient, all the while maintaining and updating the patient’s progress to other team members as well. They play a crucial role in the healthcare team, gluing them together in providing healthcare solutions to the patients (Kurth, 2017). An effective nursing professional should have the highest possible professionalism in his behavior, they should be able to guide the patient in a better manner, should have a positive inclination and should be able to provide the patient with care while keeping a close respect for their cultural as well as religious values. The nurses are deemed to make use of these skills in providing the required patient- centered care, while serving as a key role in the healthcare team, ensuring highest healthcare delivery standards at all times.
