The main aim of writing this report is to conduct an assessment performed on Report of concern received (Ref: File name) by JEOVIC Community Care. The notified concern is based on John aged 15, who has been observed to be occupied and activities are distracting him away from technology which is prime focus to connect John in the community and to enjoy his time away from technology. This is the first review of John. His parents are quite involved in all of the programs by the organization, where John has participated.
He is very active in different activities such as bush Walk, Swimming, and Movies, etc. His guardians are happy with the support provided by this organisation and Ann-Maire is responsible for making any decision regarding his son. During community access, John respond well with redirections and also knowing that staff is available for him. He does not require any health and safety needs. There is no joint planning for the case. The guardian of John has no preferences regarding the spiritual and cultural connection. He has no barrier to enjoy the community activities.
John belonged to an African family based on a maternal grandmother of age 53, Rose. Ann Maire is her thirty-two years old daughter. Rose is a retired lady who receive yearly pension benefits of $50000. She was granted legal guardianship of John in March 2005. John’s mother alleged that his son’s maternal grandmother physically abused him and intimidating him. She used to punch him in face after ordering him to clean the room. This is not the very first time she has shown such behavior and he is very much scared from her. Because she used to threaten him that if he hits at her back, she will shoot him. Further, when the grandmother left the house for few days, she left John with no food and money.
The last time she went on Sunday and did not return until Tuesday and meanwhile she did not make any alternative plan for him. Her mother told that the custody of the kid was given to her from last 10 years because they didn’t have any health insurance. Her mother told that she took help from court and filed the case for taking the guardianship from her mother. As the next hearing is due in two weeks and she has to do some paper work with her mother. She further explained that her mother is a retired school teacher.
The case was assigned to a social worker who conducted family clearance and found that Rose is a foster parent as listed in connection
Home visits were made for having meeting with the grandmother but unable to meet the concerned person
Using the intercom, another visit was made to contact anyone
Also, phone call was made at the home number
Face to face meeting was made with the family next morning at 6.45 pm
Safety and risk assessment guidelines and Tuituia framework
Medical and paediatric assessment
Interview was conducted with the John and his grandmother. On interview grandmother told that she has some conflicts with John as he doesn’t listen to her most of the times. She further explained that he is not tidy and didn’t clean the room and the toilet and also not used to do his homework regularly and her teachers make the complaints. She further told that John is in her custody from last ten years. In proof, she presented the courts documents of having the John legally in her custody. The social worker asked the grandmother about the reason of keeping the John with her and she told that her mother’s boyfriend used to punched his stomach every time when he visited her mother. She told that I don’t like the way she treated the kids and she also told that all the grand children wanted to stay with her but the mother doesn’t not allow them.
When the interview was made with John, he told that his mother’s boyfriend, Kim also brought his youngest son at the house who had a knife and he used to torture me. He further explained that Kim used to punched his face. Grandmother told that, I always warned the Kim not to touch any of my grandchildren but he never listened to me. And she also contacted the child protection department but didn’t help her.
Grandmother on her justification said that she is strict with John because she wants best from him which I think he cannot be while her stay with her mother. As the mother is not putting efforts on him to make him a good and progressed person. He was failed in sixth grade because her mother allowed him to miss the school for thirty-four days. She further told that she is only living for her grandchildren. She further told that John is very lazy and always ignore what I said to him. I also sent him for a base ball camp and he also participated in weight loss training.
On asking grandmother whether she punched the John on face, she told that, “I asked him to clean his room and I got fed up with him because he was not listening to me so that is why I punched on his face.” Further, on asking whether she often beats him, she told that she only hit him six times in total. Most of the time grandmother yell at him and take his things for some time such as iPad. She denied that there was not marks on his face or body and never beat him with an object except one day when he was very little. I beat him with belt. Grandmother also told the social worker that she is a patient of high BP and sugar and she is not able to do much work.
John participated in different activities such as baseball camping and wight loss programs
John has attachment with her mother but due to her boyfriend he is afraid of living with her
John had strong interaction with his rest of the siblings
The grandmother is willing to participate him in more outdoor activities
School is willing to support John in studies as he was failed in sixth grade
On contact with sister of Rose (Grandmother), she has told that she is a very caring lady
John has shown difficult behavior such as not very active in doing his own work such as helping her grandmother by only cleaning his room as she is an old lady.
He is afraid of his mother’s boyfriend who used to beat him often
It is evident from the case that grandmother wanted John to be active in all his work and she has an idea about how she can make efforts for improving his behavior
She has a limited idea or knowledge of domestic violence
Further Action Plan based on the initial assessment
Safety plan is developed for discussing with his mother and his grandmother
Referral has been made for Man live program and family therapy
Referral has been made for children trauma counselling
A resource teacher is arranged for the John separately by the school
Based on the above assessment, social worker had made the review and stated that the child wants to live with his siblings as being alone he felt so many things missing from his life that he can enjoy with them. Such as sharing jokes and playing with them in spare time. He also wants care of his mother. All these things will strongly impact on his mind and he might behave indifferently. He might not able to perform well in his studies as well. Also, there involved a risk of emotional harm if he stays away from the family and continued living with the grandmother.
Supports are required for addressing these concerns with the grandmother and his mother as well so both be able to provide a safe environment to the kid. Further it is considered that continues intervention from family, school, and child therapy service will be helpful overcoming the challenged John currently facing
