Group Activity or Teamwork

Group activity or teamwork plays an important role in implementing and fulfilling mutual goals in a more prompt and improved manner than undertaken individually. It has become the need of every workplace to motivate the workers for team activities (Sun et al, 2017). The key to effective group outcome is to exploit every group person’s unique competencies to inspire them to play up strengths and eliminate their weak points. In the group activity, each participant is responsible for accomplishing the task allotted to them and takes on diverse accountabilities that combined to achieve a common goal (Liu, Liu & Liu, 2018). This essay is set to reflect on my experience of undertaking a group project, my role in the team, and my contribution to the project. Furthermore, this discusses my learning from the experience and the challenges came while working in a team.

In the group project at the university, there is a team of ten participants who worked together for a common goal. In the group, there was one leader who guided and allocated diverse tasks to each member of the group. I played a variety of roles in the team activity and my leader assigned me the role of coordinator due to my extraordinary management skills of doing the tasks and managing things well. More precisely my team roles were 'plant' and 'coordinator' as the role to perform in the group activity. In the plant role, I incline to be tremendously imaginative, innovative, and logical in problem-solving in unfamiliar ways. Additionally, another role that I perform in the team is of a coordinator who always emphasizes the purposes of the team, gives the work appropriately to every member of the team (Oke et al, 2016). The skills that I brought to the project were strong leadership skills, communication skills, management skills, critical and logical thinking, and proper allocation of diverse activities to members. These robust abilities of mine led to the successful accomplishment of the project efficiently.

Apart from these skills, I demonstrated my hard work and dedication to that project. Since I was the coordinator of activities of the project, my responsibilities also included motivating other members to keep them engaged in the activities and ensure the timely delivery of work (Fekry, Dafoulas & Ismail, 2019). However, there were numerous things and skills that I attained from other people working in a team for a project. I individually learned from other members of the team that it is vital to meet the social needs of all the participants while working in a team. This particular thing helped me to attain my objectives as well as meeting all the prospects from the team. By learning this thing from the team, I created a notion for managing the team by fulfilling first the basic needs of people so that outcome of the team could be more productive. I perceived that my initiative of managing the team giving importance to team members’ needs resulted in the greater performance of the team.

Working in a group is the need for all the establishments to attain more productive outcomes and success of a project (Warrick, 2017). However, there were numerous challenges encountered by my group as all the members belonged to diverse backgrounds and hence there were conflicts of interests between the members. There was a situation where conflict of interest occurred among team members and that was due to the miscommunication between them. I solved that situation of conflict with my effective communication skills and guided them to follow the same to be more successful in life (Ogbonnaya, 2019). Furthermore, the challenge that the group faced belonged to less creative and innovative skills of members except me that was the most challenging situation. Additionally, the challenge was a lack of trust between the members due to a lack of communication and a strong relationship between them. I resolved the less creativity problem with my transformational leadership skills that allowed me to encourage innovation and creativity among team members in finishing the project. The positive things in working as a group were increasing the risk-taking abilities, conflict management skills, learning, and creativity in a person. Despite these positive aspects of working in a group, there were negatives also in the form of unequal participation, timely decision-making process, communication breakdowns, personality clashes, and more (Spoelma & Ellis, 2017).

From this experience of mine working in a group activity, I have acquired numerous novel skills from others. I have prepared myself for my future career as the workforce by acquiring leadership skills, technical skills, interpersonal skills, adaptability, strong ethics, organizational competency, creativity, risk-taking skills, and more. All of these skills are needed to work in an organization hence I have prepared myself to undertake any task in the company in my future. Furthermore, since I resolved numerous conflicts with my communication skills and trust all people. Therefore, I have acquired problem-solving skills that are required in ample quantity to work in the company and now I can make efficient decisions that are for the betterment of all the people in the group or the company. I learned that output and performance can only be augmented in the team when their needs are fulfilled by the leader.

Moreover, I would like to consider motivation as the power factor for the enhanced performance of team members in the next group activity in my future career in the workplace. I would also like to enhance my leadership skills and become an effective transformational leader who always involves members in the decision making of the company and allows them to think out of the box to reach the consensus. Therefore, I will try to be a transformational leader who has four areas namely idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration. I trust that these four qualities must be taken into consideration while leading a team or group within the business context. Hence, overall this experience of group activity is proved to be fruitful that prepared me for the prospects of life (Kurniawan et al, 2017).

I contributed my hard work, dedication, transparency, ethical behavior, and more to the project. The project led to success and positive performance with the hard work of the entire team who were engaged in the project. I demonstrated all my guidance and direction as the coordinator of a group that allowed me to generate imaginative and creative ideas and hence the success of activity in true sense. Furthermore, I made a fair contribution to the overall project by being a role model for all the other members of the group. I avoided inequality and treat each member with equity and fairness. Additionally, all the members were assigned with equal work based on the capacity of each individual. This resulted in keeping them engaged each time and motivated them with the work of their choice. Moreover, my fair contribution can be seen by the superior quality of the finished project and this could be possible only with dedication and accountability of each member.

From the above reflection of my experience working in a group activity, it can be concluded that teamwork is the essential quality and aspect that is required at each stage of life be it workplace activity. Moreover, this is required to enhance the productivity of the project with the dedication of each member and their accountabilities. It can be also be concluded that I played the role of plant and coordinator in the group activity that enabled me to bring creativity and innovativeness in the decision making for the project. Furthermore, it can also be inferred that the skills that I brought to the project were strong leadership skills, communication skills, management skills, critical and logical thinking, and proper allocation of diverse activities to members. All of these skills are needed to work in an organization hence I have prepared myself to undertake any task in the company in my future. Furthermore, since I resolved numerous conflicts with my communication skills and trust all people. In a future group activity, I would like to give more importance to the motivation factor and enhancing my effective leadership skills required for more outcomes from a group activity.
