Introduction

One of the key aspects of research is of is a methodology that determines the way relevant data is to be collected for the research and the way it is to be analyzed. According to Idowu (2016), research methodology is the specific technique or procedure which is used by researchers for the identification, selection, processing, and analysis of the information regarding a topic. The problem which is being investigated in the research is of overcoming concrete failures through reinforcing and fabrication of stainless steel. 3 key questions were formulated to study this problem and this report presents the research methodology which can provide a satisfactory solution to the specific problem and a sound basis for data collection and analysis for the research.

Methodologies

Research question: What are the parameters and the methods on which the alloys are selected?

This question will help to determine what parameter does the selection of alloys depends. Since the problem under consideration is of overcoming concrete failures, it is important to select proper alloys which will provide maximum strength to concrete structures (Kumar, 2019). This analysis is pertinent as there is a significant degree of difference in the qualities of alloys which determines their strengths and weaknesses. The specific fit for the use of alloys for construction will be investigated as stainless steel exhibits favorable properties to standard steel, excluding its drawbacks (King and Mackey, 2016).

Research Methodology I

Research Paradigm

A research paradigm is a research model or approach used to conduct research that has been verified by the research community and is in practice for a long time. Interpretivist paradigm believes that human behavior is multi-layered and that it cannot be measured by predefined probabilistic models. To answer the above-mentioned research question, an interpretive research paradigm will be used to find out what parameters do builders select which alloy is to be used. Interpretivism paradigm will help to include the perspective of individuals who are part of the construction process into the research (Basias and Pollalis, 2018).

Research Design

Research design includes a set of procedures and methods that are used to collect and analyze measures of the variables involved in a research problem. This research will use the explorative research design to answer the above-mentioned question (Murshed and Zhang, 2016). This is so because this research design focuses on the discovery of thoughts and ideas and provides comprehension and deep insights into the more precise investigation (Pruzan, 2016).

Research Approach

Research approach suggests the way researcher aims to analyze the problem and arrive at a conclusion, such as whether the researcher is looking for more specific findings from a general set of data or general findings from specific data set (Idowu, 2016). This research will use the inductive research approach as it will allow the researcher to effectively deal with the qualitative nature of the data and is suited for a research question that aims to get the perspective of builders and other stakeholders on the selection of alloys in construction.

Data Type

Data is defined as a systematic record of a specific quantity and is the representation of different values of the said quantity represented collectively in a set. In the given research, surveys will be used to collect the required data on the various factors which determine the selection of alloys for the construction project. Survey methodology will be used for making statistical inferences regarding the population under consideration. The survey will use a mix of open-ended and choice-based question regarding features of alloys which influence the decision of stakeholders (Pruzan, 2016). The survey will include questions regarding alloy properties such as corrosion and heat resistance, localized corrosion, product form, and fabrication, etc.

Sample

The survey will be conducted with the individuals involved in the selection of alloys for the construction projects namely the builders and structural engineers. The population is relevant for the study as they are the ones who eventually decide which kind of alloy should be used. The sample population involves 60 builders and 35 structural engineers form different construction companies who work on concrete structures.

Advantages

The advantages of this research methodology include a high representation of the involved population and relatively low costs. This methodology also facilitates convenient data gathering and little or no observer subjectively. Furthermore, because of the large number of data being gathered, researchers can ensure a better description of the relative features of the population involved in the study. Such surveys can also be sent via e-mails or fax which makes it more convenient to gather the relevant data.

Limitations

Like every other methodology, this research methodology is also riddled with several limitations such as inflexible design and inaccurate references. The inductive approach which is being used in this research is quite limited in nature and only facilitates a single inference or observation from a specific situation. Furthermore, the qualitative nature of the data set is susceptible to personal bias of researcher and findings o such study is usually not useful in practice decision making(Murshed and Zhang, 2016).

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations of this research include the safety of respondents and respect for the dignity of the participants involved in the research. Moreover, the research should also ensure that the personal data of respondents is kept safely. The anonymity of individuals participating in the research should also be ensured by the researcher. Researchers should also avoid any deception or exaggeration regarding their inferences from the survey data (Taherdoost, 2017).

Research question: What are the features of appropriate stainless steel in the construction industry?

The identification of the type of stainless steel will be conducted for construction as a significant amount of stainless steel is processed for the construction industry for several different purposes including the fact it has good tolerance for corrosion along with low and high temperatures (Murshed and Zhang, 2016). This question is relevant to the study under consideration as it is necessary to identify the features that are best suited for construction purposes. Moreover, it is crucial to determine which kind of stainless steel provides a high degree of tolerance for corrosion without the necessity for more safety.

Research Methodology II

Research Paradigm

Most of the research paradigms come from two research approaches, namely, positivism and interpretivism. A positivism research paradigm is mainly used for quantitative research because of its empirical nature and its ability to study facts. Positivists believe that the findings of a study can be generalized into another one despite different situations and environments (Ryan, 2018). To answer this research question, the positivism research paradigm will be used as it facilitates the exploration of social reality based on observation and reason.

Research Design

Research design is usually classified into two broad categories i.e. descriptive and exploratory research design. While descriptive research design is used in research to explain and explore a group, situation or individual, explorative research deals with formulating a problem for a clear investigation. This research will use the descriptive research design to accurately and systematically describe the features of appropriate stainless steel in the construction industry.

Research Approach

The research approach is mainly divided into the deductive and inductive approach and while the deductive approach is a form of aimed and testing theory, the inductive approach deals with the generation of new through from data analysis. Simply, in the deductive approach, the focus is on causality, whilst in the inductive approach, the emphasis is on looking at new phenomena or exploring the previous research phenomenon from a different perspective. The deductive approach will be used in this research to facilitate the analysis of quantitative data.

Data Type

Data is a collection of figures and facts which are to be used for certain purposes such as an analysis or a survey (Idowu, 2016). The source of data is very important in research as it directly influences the findings of the research. Data for his research will be gathered through existing data set regarding the features of stainless steel which are considered to be appropriate for the construction industry by other researchers.

Sample

The sample size for data would include existing literature on stainless steel and its features. Books and journal articles will be used to gather the existing literature on appropriate characteristics of stainless steel for construction projects.

Advantages

The positivism approach relies on quantitative data which is less susceptible to the personal bias of the researcher. Furthermore, the well-defined structure of positivism studies makes the study more reliable. The deductive approach of this study will help to generalize research findings to a certain extent and to measure concepts quantitatively.

Limitations

The major limitations of this research are associated with the use of secondary data which is not collected for this particular research. Furthermore, because of the secondary nature of the data set, researchers are not aware of study-specific glitches and nuances in the data collection process.

Ethical Considerations

Ethical considerations for this research include the de-identification of data before being released to the researchers and the consent of study subjects (Ryan, 2018). Moreover, outcomes of the research should not allow the re-identification of participants and the use of secondary data neither must result in any distress nor any damage (Pruzan, 2016).

Research question: What are the drivers and barriers to using stainless steel in construction projects?

The barriers and drivers will be analyzed for the utilization of stainless steel in construction projects. This will help to determine the extent of facilitators present in the market for the implementation of stainless steel in the construction industry(Kivunja and Kuyini, 2017). Along with this, it will also help to determine the reasons behind the usage of carbon steel rather than stainless steel in concrete structures and to assess the factors for which the carbon steel is given preference over stainless steel.

Research Methodology III

Research Paradigm

This study will use the interpretivism research paradigm which will help the researchers to conduct a more contextual and holistic analysis, and focus on the meaning for the perspectives of the respondents involved in the process. This paradigm is well suited for this research as it explores the interrelated and hidden processes behind the use of stainless steel in construction projects (Ryan, 2018).

Research Design

The researcher has chosen exploratory research architecture in this research report because it would be appropriate for the use of main and secondary data collection instruments, as well as qualitative and quantitative data forms. The analysis methods applied in this analysis review were quantitative research process, qualitative research process, and mixed-method. The quantitative approach simply allows the usage of quantitative data collection methods simpler. Similarly, qualitative approach just supports qualitative data in the data collection process

Research Approach

In this research analysis, deductive reasoning methodology will be used to draw a particular inference, rather than a theoretical hypothesis, to the reasoning problem described above. Besides, deductive analysis methodology was chosen, as this research method ensures the use of data collection that uses primary methods and also enhances the use of quantitative data (Li et al., 2017). Furthermore, the technique for deductive reasoning was selected as this study approach promotes the use of primary techniques of collection of data and also encourages the use of quantitative data.

Data Type

The survey questionnaire approach will be effective in gathering quantifiable data that provides detailed outcomes for a specific sample. However, it should be noted here that the survey questionnaire will certainly help to gather quantifiable details and vast numbers, but by utilizing the survey questionnaire as a data collection method, it is not possible to collect accurate information from the respondents(Kivunja and Kuyini, 2017). The resource that is essential for research data collection is the interview process. Like the survey questionnaire, the interview form has no predetermined responses that the respondent will pick one from. The respondent will be able, in the interview process, to address the query however he or she wishes (Cuervo‐Cazurra, Mudambi, Pedersen and Piscitello, 2017).

Sample

Research should also ensure that the personal data of respondents is kept safely. The anonymity of individuals participating in the research should also be ensured by the researcher.
