The main purpose of this essay is to gain an understanding about the different styles of leadership through the process of self-reflection. Through this essay, the qualities of an effective leader would be analyzed using the questionnaires and will be compared to relevant leadership theories. Moreover, the qualities needed to develop oneself as a leader would be considered along with the strategies that would be required to develop oneself as an effective leader. This self-reflection essay is very much essential for the beginning of the MBA program for an individual.
As a leader, I think I have the qualities of being a democratic leader as I don’t impose my orders on others. As per the democratic theory of leadership, a leader allows the individuals belonging to his team to take part in the decision making process of an organization (Teles, 2015). As a leader I rarely spoon-feed my team members as to what they are required to do, instead I give them an opportunity to take an active part in the process of decision making. Furthermore, I usually plan a strategy for my team and ask my team members to work in their own way. I think I have very effective communication skills and this is the only reason due to which I can be very clear with the members of my group (AHRI, 2018). Also, it has been determined that as a leader, I have great interest in going to the depth of the things which will pave more way for me to learn new ideas and concepts. I think this is very much essential for any person who wants to develop as a leader. Also, I always consider for other’s feelings in the course of making any kind of a decision. I think this can be a drawback because if I always think about others feelings, I will not be able to arrive at a sound decision (Akers et al., 2016). As pointed out by my class-mates and friends, I think I am a genuine leader and I have a good level of confidence in whatever work I do. I think I am not vigilant with my team and treat them very much kindly. Furthermore, my strength is that I am steady in my work and I don’t change my paths and motive consistently (Hughes et al., 2018).
After analyzing the above qualities of mine as a leader, it is clear that I have great prospects of developing as an efficient leader. I think, since I have embraced the democratic leadership style, my team members will not feel dominated. Since, I will consider their opinions while taking a decision, they will also feel a sense of belonging to the team and in this way I can contribute towards a great extent to inspire them (Institute of Managers and Leaders 2018). Moreover, my interest in constantly learning new things will expand my knowledge and I will be able to influence others in a much better way. Also, I think one of my biggest strengths is my communication skill and it is because of this only I can make my view-points clear to others. Furthermore, this will eliminate any chance of misunderstanding and I can prove myself to be an effective leader for the members of my team (Northouse, 2019). However, there is a great weakness that I possess that I can’t be strict with others. I think, not being strict can be good to some extent but there should also be specific limitations to it. I think I should know where to draw the line, to eliminate any chance of a conflict or chaos in my team. I think here I should apply the authoritarian style of leadership to some extent and develop strategies for my team so that I can allocate them their duties and they will have a clear idea about the duties they are required to perform (Jiang et al., 2018). However, to make it a little lenient I can involve the viewpoints of my team while framing the strategies.
Through this essay, it can be concluded that democratic leadership style is good leadership theory to be adopted by a leader. But it is important to have an adequate level of rules and regulations at place and to exercise some level of strictness with the members of the concerned team. Also, it has been determined that if a leader possesses an effective communication skill, there will be very less scope for misunderstanding within the team and also it will perform in the most effective manner. Moreover, a leader should not make any decision based on the feelings of the team members but on the basis of the validity of the different elements needed to make a decision.
