Academic Communication Skills

This essay contains a reflection of my participation in two group assessments focused on academic communication skills. Learning how to put my diverse thoughts in words came to me as a blessing through these group assessments. Listening to my group members gave me different ideas about communication skills as all the group members communicated their ideas in a way that was clear and understandable. The group assessment was a very good opportunity for me to develop my academic communication skills in the practical environment.

I have felt a sense of understanding and significance of communication skills in academics. Activities such as Presentations, Viva exams, Extra-curricular activities, and all these things need communication skills so that the listeners learn what one speaks. Taking part in the group assessments led me to make these things possible and my activities became commendable. I am very grateful to the assessor who gave me an opportunity to develop my communication skills in the practical day to day life.

The issue I face while communicating to someone is that I have a lot of ideas in my mind but I am unable to communicate each and every idea in a limited time frame. From these group assessments, I learnt how to narrow my ideas into words so that it becomes easy for the listener to understand what I am trying to say. Personally, I have welcomed the importance of building up a great relationship with the other person while communicating. One of the good qualities I possess is that I can build eye contact and have a face to face discussion with the other person.

Now that I have learnt a new quality of framing ideas into words, it will be easier for me to express my thoughts to the person with whom I have face to face discussion. Both these skills will also help me to present my views in front of a gathering at the same time building relation with them. The gatherings will be responsive too when such a relationship is built up. There would also be a feeling of certainty and trust in the conversation from the side of gatherings as well as from my side.
