Effective Leadership in Health

In the field of healthcare it is seen that a leader is an important part of the healthcare system which is also required for the effective and safe care of the patients. Effective leader is not only important for the care provided but also for other activities that as a nurse is important in a healthcare setting. An effective leader should have critical thinking, problem-solving capacity, to manage the challenges faced by the workforce, administrative and governance all these are cumulatively required for good care of the patients in terms of quality and safety (MacPhee, Chang, Lee & Spiri, 2013). There are many theories of leadership namely, transformational, democratic, Laissez-Faire, Autocratic and servant (American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination, 2014). For the development of my leadership skills in healthcare setting for the effective working of me as a leader, working as a part of the team and provide treatment to the care patients in the healthcare setting I feel transformational leadership is appropriate.

In this kind of leadership which is transformational is the management style in which the leader works by motivating the employees and encourage them to take ownership of their roles and responsibilities and not just follow what they are asked to do (Daly, Jackson, Mannix, Davidson & Hutchinson, 2014). As a leader it is important to set an example by the working of the self so that the team members can learn by seeing and follow the same. This theory was originally developed by James MacGregor Burns, a leadership expert, who explains the type of leadership as the relationship between the employees and leaders by motivating each other such that there is value system congruence between leader and people working for the leader. In the aim to motivate each other it is required that the leader understand the expectations of the team and members so that they can be inspired and the opinions can be met (Daly et al., 2014).

There are different components of transformational leadership, that is, impact, motivation which is strong, stimulation of intellect and personal consideration. When the leadership style is employed in an appropriate manner it is seen that the employees have good level of satisfaction and have more commitment towards the organization and the ability to work will improve (Xu, 2017). This is also measured by the job satisfaction, employee retention and less turnover rate of the employees and better care that is provided to the patient. Depending on the area of work the leadership skills that are employed in different settings are different but essentially the workability of the leaders remains the same (Xu, 2017).

Explanation of The Creative Representation

In my clinical practice, I would employ transformational leadership while working in the hospital healthcare setting. When the nurses working in my team would come for the shift I would talk to them individually every day to get updates on their working in their respective shifts and are there any deficit areas which could be improved upon. I have always tried that this update that I take would be done separately not infront of other colleagues or patients. Similarly, in case of conflict I lend ear to everyone involved so that it can be resolved effectively. I feel obtaining feedback is very important for personal and professional growth and I try to obtain the same in my practice.
