Individual Learning Goal 1

My learning goal is the medical administration with IV and IM, as I want to accomplish this learning during SNUG 208 WPE placements. I would like to practice more on nursing skills related to the mixing liquid medications with IV and learn to administer an intramuscular injection. I would also like to improve both writing and verbal communication skills with the patients. This is correlated with the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) framework as specific liquid medications mixing with IV in standard measures. Also, it is a realistic goal which can be achieved by timely medical administration of registered nurses.

Which of the NMBA RN Standard for Practice does this learning goal relate to?

This goal is related to Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurses Standard 6 for practice (2016). This standard is to provide safe, appropriate and responsive quality of nursing practice to the patients. This practice also involves the clinical and non-clinical roles of nursing practices of enrolled nurses, as only they are able to administer medicines other than registered nurses (Registered nurse standards for practice, 2017).

Rationale to why this is important for my practice as a nurse

As per the ANSAT behavioural clues 2016, most of the learning goals are correlated with patient and healthcare communication along with the skills and knowledge among nurses.

My learning goal to provide medical administration with IV and IM is important because it helps in developing my skills as-

  • It helps me to learn the mixing of medications from ampules into small IV bags and how to initiate the IV medications. In previous semester we learned the skills but not practiced them on patients. I would like to mix the liquid medications with IV saline.
  • I would like to direct an intramuscular injection to the patients, as previous semester all medications were preloaded subcutaneous medications. These medications are very painful and may discomfort the patient, so it must be taken care of.
  • It helps me in developing a strong therapeutic and professional relationship with my patients.
  • It would improve my writing skills of progressive notes of patient’s, because it is the major need while providing care to the patient. (Millichamp and Johnston, 2020).

Strategies to achieve this goal

  • To learn about the mixing of IV medications or administration of IM injection, I will revise my notes and videos which can help me to recall the steps. Moreover, I will practice these skills to get hands on experience.
  • To build a strong therapeutic relationship with patients, I will behave more friendly, politely and professionally with them. Also, I would try to remember their names and ask about them that how they are feeling with the treatment provided.
  • To write good progressive notes, I will take assiduous notes throughout my clinical shifts. I will also take advice of clinical instructor while writing the notes.

Individual Learning Goal 2

My 2nd learning goal is the focussed mental health assessment of patients, as I want to achieve this during SNUG 208 WPE placement. Towards this goal, I would like to practice ‘psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners’ (PMHNP) process to maintain the health of patients. This process is being conducted by help of interviews and examinations. This is correlated with the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) framework as the goal is specific and meaningful towards the mental health assessment of patients. This can be achievable by practicing a relevant PMHNP process, and by conducting timely interviews and examinations.

Which of the NMBA RN Standard for Practice does this learning goal relate to?

This goal is related to Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurses Standard 4 for practice (2016). This standard is to conduct comprehensive and systematic assessments of the patients. This practice allows registered nurses to conduct the assessments and analyse the data and information and conclude the outcomes for treatment process (Registered nurse standards for practice, 2017).

Rationale to why this is important for my practice as a nurse

According to ANSAT behavioural cues nurses are allowed to comprehensively conduct the patient’s assessment. This assessment process is important for my practice as a nurse because PMHNP are necessary to understand the reason of patient’s distress. That is whether it is because of the medical condition of patient other neurological illness. Thus, PMHNP examines a patient’s physical and mental health by help of an assessment.

Psychiatric mental health RN develops a nursing diagnosis and healthcare plan to implement in nursing process and evaluates its efficiency. It has several other advantages due to which I choose this goal as my nursing practice, such as-

  • As per American Psychiatric Nurses association, PHMNPs are helpful in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the patient having psychiatric disorders. It also helps in identifying the possible risk factors.
  • PMNHPs contributes to provide quality care and healthcare reform of the suffering patient.
  • It provides holistic care to the patient’s and also help in identification of comorbid medical issues that are required to be treated as well. (Alfes and Zimmermann, 2020).

Strategies to achieve this goal

PMNHP assessment is the baseline for psychiatric-mental health record that registered nurses use to evaluate the health status of patient and formulate a healthcare plan accordingly. There are 6 steps to develop a mental-health strategic plan to achieve my goal-

  • Making a commitment to the planning process and provide leadership.
  • Build a strong team to participate in planning. Different professionals’ ideas will make the process more accurate.
  • Clear a program idea for mental health services by developing a holistic approach that also address the relationship of family or the staff administrators.
  • Access the program’s current mental health and consultation services and set goals and outcomes. ‘SMART’ (specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time- limited) objectives were planned to get better outcomes.
  • Prioritize, strategize and plan next steps for future concerns.
  • Plan for regular review and always get updated to the plan.
