Health-Related Quality of Life Among Caregivers of Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury

Description of Spinal Ward Case Study

Recently, I was shifted to the spinal ward where the patients with complete and incomplete spinal cord injury were admitted. A patient named Bill was admitted to this ward. He had fallen from height was having a complete spinal cord injury and was suffering from extreme pain in the back and neck. Despite his extremely poor health condition, the health professionals showed no collaboration, receptiveness to patient’s feedback, and work ethics. Moreover, the two of the incompatible nurses made an argument in front of the patient regarding the responsibilityof the assigned nurse for the patient.

Feelings of Spinal Ward Case Study

I felt very bad for the patient as he was in extreme pain and the health professionals did nothing except for blaming the assigned nurse who was not even present there. I provided him with health care services and also talked to the patient, his family members, and associated healthcare providers for shared decision making and effective care.

Evaluation of Spinal Ward Case Study

The positive thing about the vent was the patient’s condition started stabilizing after he was provided with health care services. The negative activities were the attitude of the other health professionals that delayed the treatment for the patient and their conflict made the patient more stressed. Comprehensive rehabilitation and early surgery can reduce the high risks of mortality in spinal injury patients and increases the chances to enable them to live an independent life (Creswell, 2019). Moreover, despitegenerating a conflict, health professionals should have contributed to teamwork for providing better and quick care to serious patients and should exhibit effective communication with patients and other co-workers as well for effective care delivery to the patient.

Analysis of Spinal Ward Case Study

From this event, it was learned that if a patient had been admitted to the hospital then it is the responsibility of the health care professionals to attend him/her as soon as possible without any delays and provide him/her with patient-centered care. According to Tyrrell & Pryor (2016), managing/resolving the conflicts in the health care workplace is a time-consuming but necessary step for a health care leader. This is because the conflicts can have adverse effects on patient care, morale, and productivity as well. As a health care leader, I resolved the conflict in no-time, by collaborating, compromising, and accommodating – the conflict resolution strategies. I ensured the complete, continued, and comprehensive care of the patient by informing the doctors and other senior healthcare professionals like physicians.I also talked to the patient and took his feedback during assessment for pain and other health issues. Moreover, any delay in spinal injury cases can lead to serious complications like respiratory issues, pneumonia, atelectasis, neuropathic joint arthropathy, autonomic dsyreflexia, and many others (Tyrrell & Pryor, 2016).

Conclusion on Spinal Ward Case Study

The patient should immediately be attended and the doctors should be informed about the seriousness of the case. The patient should be asked to stay still to prevent the movements as he is suffering from pain. The nurse should ensure effective communication with patients, their families, and associated healthcare providers, and the assessments should be inter-professional with the involvement of physical therapists and nurses. In such cases, patients are vulnerable and are oftenemotionallytraumatized. So, the nurses and health care professionals should ensure clinical supervision and teal debriefs (Delaney et al., 2017).

Action Plan on Spinal Ward Case Study

In the future, if a similar situation arises then the trauma, orthopedics and neurosurgical services should be informed before admission to the emergency department. The entire spine of the patient should be immobilized with the help of headcollar, log roll, or pat slide with the aid of personnel so that the spinal alignment is maintained. A highly specialized interdisciplinary approach should be used that addresses social, psychological, functional, physiological, and medical issues (Creswell, 2019). The physicians and other associated health care providers should be encouraged to contribute to teamwork for effective patient care like conducting necessary tests and assessments. The health care leader should ensure that the healthcare multidisciplinary team uses interpersonal skills like good verbal or written communication that influences the health and mood of the patients leading to a strong patient-nurse relationship (Nogueira et al., 2016). This ensures a clear understanding of the patient’s feelings and needs enabling the nurse to establish a patient-centered care plan. The health care leader should encourage his/her co-workers to develop strong interpersonal skills like appropriate body language, voice, posture, receptiveness to feedback, conflict management, and collaboration (Nogueira et al., 2016).
