Observations on Stanley Park Field Excursion

8:00 am: Stanley Park was aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and I started to wander around, exploring different parts of the park. Feeling sort of hungry, the first thing I did in Stanley Park was finding a Tim Hortons Café and getting myself a cup of steaming coffee along with glazed donuts. With the help of signboards and my GPS tracker, I found the special coffee shop and satisfied my hunger.

9:00 am: I rent a bike from one of the locals and went on to see the beautiful park riding across the famous seawall which is said to be home to almost 5,00,000 trees like cedar, fir and hemlock and 500 wildlife species including racoons, eagles, bats and beavers. Merry couples along with their children were picnicking on the park’s soothing grass. Children were riding bicycles and feeding the raccoons.

10:00 am: Having been pleased by its beauty, I decided to capture most of its sites inside my camera and so I went to the aquarium of Vancouver. This aquarium was Vancouver’s largest, incorporated inside the Stanley Park. The aquarium was full of people from far off lands exploring its activities and enjoying their time. Sea otters, Sea lions, dolphins and sea turtles caught everyone’s attention and served various performances to please the audiences. As much as thousands of people were wandering across the aquarium, clicking photographs and admiring the underwater life. People were directed by signboards at every display and staff at the aquarium guided them to give a tour of the iconic site. Indians, Europeans and people from other countries were also there besides the Canadians. English was mainly used as a medium of communication and was also printed on signboards.

  • While lots of people were enticed by the tactics of the Sealions, trainers and performers dancing along with the dolphins got to hear loud rounds of applauses.
  • Many Indians were eating sandwiches and burgers while admiring the wildlife performances.
  • People from all age groups, children, adults and the elderly were wandering across the park and enjoying themselves.
  • The aquarium was designed very beautifully and even had soft toys, keychains and bags with dolphins printed on them at the exit, so that people could take back these items as memories of the place.

12:00 am: I was tired and hence went to the Granville Island public market for food retreat. I ordered salad for the starters, had Seafood and Mexican for the main course, and fulfilled my meal by having hot chocolate fudge. A couple ordered everything on the menu and seeming to be pretty hangry. When their food arrived they gobbled up everything down their throat in a couple of minutes (Wayfaringkiwi.com, 2020).

I have used secondary sources like famous travel sites for acquiring data about famous places and where to visit when in Stanley park along with the activities to be done.

My Research question from the observation: Is Stanley Park becoming an adventure spot for tourists from across the world as a sight-seeing spot when in Vancouver?

Theoretical Lens

Possibilism and Environmental Determinism: While Environmental Determinism states that all human activities are guided by the nature in which the person persists, Possibilism involves the relationship between people and their surroundings is shaped by the development plans for humans offered by the natural environment. The environment offers opportunities for individuals to choose what they want. People become comfortable of the different living conditions the earth offers in different conditions and situations, becoming habitual with time. Nature does not state what one might become but presents special development opportunities among them which may open the possibility for them to become what they aspire as a result of what they have acquired from their culture and surroundings (Gktoday.in, 2016).

According to GK today, possibilism and environmental determinism are two approaches which define the relationship between natural environment and people inhibited in it. The physical characteristics of the environment especially the climate play an important role in determining the psychology of human brain which ultimately frames their culture and behavior in the society. As for Stanley park, it is situated in one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a moderately cold climate offering breathtaking views of the city, along with offering various opportunities and activities for adventure and fun to the tourists. People not only from Canada, but from India, Europe, and various parts of the world have visited and enjoyed the park and its facilities. The environment it offers attracts visitors to do what they want by presenting a number of options before them. These include aquariums to see and experience the beauty of underwater animals, Tim Horton cafes for tasty snack and supper, Grandville island market for fulfilling hunger and seawall for wandering across the huge park on bicycles to explore the park and its activities. The street art contributes to the cultural history of the place. This way travelers worldwide have become a part of the adventure offered by the Stanley park and have became habitual of visiting it regularly to enjoy in the lap of nature in the aesthetic city of Vancouver.

Key five themes of spatial perspective: (European journal of American studies, 2015).

  • Place and everyday life: The uniqueness of Stanley park lies in its relationship with the visitors which it shares through its food, activities, views, adventure and recreation facilities.
  • Public space: Stanley park offers various different activities which are a blend of the rural and urban culture like seawall biking, aquarium, scenic drive, second beach, lost lagoon, etc. which make it one of the best parks in the world (Planetware.com, 2020).
  • Culture, globalization, and identity: the totem poles of Stanley park, denote its open culture, its art, history, food and tourists globally who visit it, all form a part of its culture.
  • Governance: The Vancouver park board committee elected in 1888 regulates and manages the park (Vancouver.ca, 2020).
  • Urbanization: measures are being taken by authorities to reduce vehicular traffic at Stanley park through its long-term feasibility plan (Dailyhive.com, 2020).

Conclusion on Stanley Park Field Excursion

The essay stated my trip to Stanley park and what I did there. This way I was able to carefully observe, data collect and analyze how people interacted with each other in that place, its socio-economic status of population, famous recreation sites in the place, art and culture, adventure and activities, etc. Stanley park is one aesthetic park situated in Vancouver which attracts tourists from all over the world with its environmental opportunities for recreation.
