Statistics for Public Health

A short telephone survey can be conducted to find out the demographic characteristics of people in the catchment of a local community health service with an aim to distinguish the people who utilise these services and the ones who do not utilise these services. The identification of these two groups can be done by conducting a survey. For conducting a survey, it is important to obtain a list of population so that data can be extracted. One of the potential source for the collection of population data is census data (Wardrop et al., 2018). The data that is collected for the whole population is through census. The count of people by geographical location and basic demographic characteristics can be obtained using actual decennial census that is obtained for the whole resident population. The lists of people that is obtained through census serves the benefit that it is reliable source and authentic source of information (Wilson et al., 2017). The disadvantage of using census is that it is difficult to obtain census.

The process of sampling will be performed after the identification of population through random sampling method. The advantage of random sampling method is that is bias free method that eliminates the risk of sampling bias (Aono & Nguyen, 2017). The disadvantage is that it may lead to misleading results because it fails to select a particular start of the population (Lynn, 2019).

The process that will be followed to recruit participants is that these people will be contacted on their telephone number that will be obtained through telephone directory. The participants who gives consent to participate in the survey will be recruited and others will be contacted to complete the sample size of 150 people. This survey questionnaire will be filled by the respondents and the answers will be evaluated for distinguishing the people who actually use local community health service and the people who do not use these services. This questionnaire has some open ended questions also that will help in learning the reason why some of these people do not use local community health services. The close ended questions will help in learning about whether they avail these services or not.
