Social Work and Mental Health

If we see self harm is done by teens in this generation as they might be experiencing some sort of stress, low self-esteem, conflicting within the families, feeling unsafe or lonely etc. All these things lead them to harming themselves in some way or the other. These girls are self harming themselves which is definitely not a good sign for their mental health. As a social worker we can help them from taking such steps in various ways like:

  • Engaging with a psychiatrist: they are specialised in these issues of understanding mental health problems and by engaging them with a doctor it would help them to not act in a self harming manner. (Psychom, 2018)
  • Providing emotional assistance: in times like these they need a person with whom they can connect with their problems so the parents and the teachers should listen to the children and give them support in every manner and try to boost in them confidence. (Help Guide, 2019)
  • Engaging them in activities: when the teens are busy with some fruitful work these thoughts do not come into the mind and it also helps them to cope up with these problems and makes them more productive. (Kids Health, 2015)
  • Hiring a counsellor at school: the school should have a teacher who is an expert in understanding child psychology and who can help in guiding them to be on the right path and from stopping them to going in the way of self destruction. (Sec Ed, 2019)
  • Practicing physical exercises: working out and practicing physical exercises like- yoga, meditation, swimming etc will help the girls to boost their mental levels of energy and it would distract their minds from doing self harm to themselves. (Raising Children, 2019)
  • Taking the help of treatment centre: there are certain places which are specializing in these issues related to children and teenagers committing self harm which will help in moulding the children’s and adolescents mind set and ideas from self destructive behaviour to being a responsible individual. (Very Well Mind, 2020)
  • Parents should take initiative in setting their social life: in today’s modern world most of the teens and adolescents are active on social media which creates a huge impact these days on the mental health of the children. So it is the responsibility of the parents to set up and form the online life of young children in such a manner that they can resist their teenager lives. (Michelle, 2019)

Thus with the help of these measures and steps the parents and the teachers and management of the school can help and enable in inculcating and imbibing in the girls a level of self confidence and boosting their level of energy. This will also help them to evolve as a better human being and doing something fruitful in their respective lives. This will help them to become a self esteemed responsible citizen and individual rather than becoming a person who is self destructing and engaging in self harming ways to one’s own personality.
