The significance of ecological footprint calculator could be seen in the way it helps to understand the consumption of natural resources and underline the level of carbon emission by an individual. The study will help to understand the ways in which excessive amount of carbon emission could have a negative impact on the environmental surroundings and affect the society. Besides this, the study will shed light on the various aspects of ecological footprint calculations and present a concise idea about the ways in which it can be reduced for mitigating the negative impact on the society. The results of part one and two will be reflected and it will illustrate some of the important aspects that require serious considerations. Apart from this, the later section of the study will present a notion about the techniques that could be deployed in terms of reducing the negative impact on the society and regain the level of ecological footprint.
As per my results of part one, I could understand that amendments were required in some of the major aspects to control the emission of carbon for the betterment of the society. According to the results, I could analyse that my personal Earth Overshoot day would be on the 11th of April. It indicates that I have used huge amount of natural resources from the earth that is ideally equivalent to the amount of natural resources renewed by the earth in the span of one year. This indicates a serious concern, as natural resources are being used to a great extent in some form or the other (footprintcalculator.org, 2020). According to my present lifestyle, the number of earths that would be required is 3.6. This is yet another concern, as it has an immense negative impact on the adjoining factors that are responsible for the betterment of mankind. It is imperative for me to understand that the ecological footprint of an individual includes both aspects namely societal and personal impacts.
It can be stated that the use of personal aspects such as mobility, food and other similar aspects comprise of the major amount of carbon emission and increased ecological footprints. These are some of the ecological factors that are responsible for selecting an appropriate lifestyle. However, alongside the personal impacts, the societal impacts could be considered in this regard. It includes the public transportation, infrastructure, and the military of the country. As a result, I could analyse that the impact of my personal and societal choices is an essential aspect that helps to determine my carbon emission and my ecological footprint. In order to manage my carbon footprint, I should focus on making appropriate choices. This will help to maintain the level of sustainability in the right manner.
After analysing the results of the first part, it was important for me to analyse the results of the second part that was illustrated by land type and consumption category. The results were somewhat shocking for me to grasp. I could understand that I was responsible for nearly 46% of carbon emission annually. The amount sums up to approximately 8.2 tonnes of carbon emission on a yearly basis. Besides this, my food consumption was nearly 3.1 global hectares and my shelter consumption was about 0.1 global hectares. However, mobility, goods, and service consumption were about 0.8, 1, and 1.2 global hectares respectively. This clearly indicated that I need to mend my ways in terms of consumption of natural resources. This would help to enhance the level of sustainability in the environment and will allow the individuals to focus on maintaining healthy modes of lifestyle (footprintcalculator.org, 2020). The total amount of ecological footprint summed up to 6.1 global hectares. This is clearly an illustration of the negative impact on the society and the ways in which the negative impacts are being maximised. As a result, it is imperative for me to make sure that I took care of my lifestyle to reduce the level of carbon emission.
I must focus on the ways in which carbon emission could be reduced and my ecological footprint could be enhanced for the betterment of the society. This will have a positive impact on my lifestyle and will allow me to lead a healthy and prosperous life by preserving the natural resources for future use. Besides this, it helps to ensure that the societal impact is minimised and excessive emission of carbon does not have negative impact on the society. This is an important aspect that could be considered responsible for reducing the emission of carbon and maintain proper balance of the personal and societal aspect.
The results of the quiz indicated that it required amendments in terms of dealing with the increased level of carbon emission and consumption of natural resources. The solutions would help to focus on the exact techniques that are needed for improving the level of sustainability in the environment and preserve the natural resources for future usage. In a survey, it was estimated that nearly 70-80% of the population would be residing in cities by the end of the year 2050. As a result, it is essential for maintaining the level of carbon emission in a positive manner and reduce the negative impact of the same on the society (overshootday.org, 2020). It is imperative for focus on the usage of smart city planning and using relevant strategies for urban development. This can be done my managing the natural capital in a significant manner and reducing the human demand for certain commodities. It is essential to reduce the environmental impact per capita on the cities. Besides this, expansion of the public transport would create greater scope for individuals depending on the usage of natural resources (Pretis & Kaufmann, 2020). Lastly, sustainable urbanisation is an essential aspect for developing the cities into better places to reside.
It is understandable that nearly 57% of carbon emission is included in the total emission made by humans. As a result, inclusion of decarbonising of the economy would help to create a suitable balance amidst the renewable resources and ecological footprint. This will help to improve the climatic conditions in the countries and will have a positive impact on the usage of natural resources in a diligent manner (overshootday.org, 2020). With the aid of this, one can understand the benefits of maintaining a balance between ecological footprint and emission of carbon. It is necessary to focus on the ways in which the renewable resources could be managed efficiently. However, the impact of greenhouse gases can be considered highly important in this regard. It is important to make sure that the level of greenhouse gas is reduced for the betterment of mankind. This would lead to greater benefits from both the financial and environmental aspect. It will result in enhanced level of electricity production and improved level of energy development. As a result, it would be easier for an individual to reduce their carbon emission and enhance the rate of ecological footprint. This indicates that the Earth Overshoot day could be moved by 21 days without having any kind of probable impact on the economy or human comfort.
Food is one of the most essential aspects of the ecological footprint. It is necessary to understand that almost half of the biocapacity of the earth is used to provide food to mankind. However, there are two major issues concerning the utilisation of food. One of the major issues is the inefficiency in terms of production of food and the other issue is the wastage of food. It is observed that animal resources have more potential compared to plant resources in terms of producing food products. As a result, the Chinese government is concerned about reducing the consumption of meat by 50%, as it will help to reduce the rate of ecological footprint by 377 million GHA (overshootday.org, 2020). Besides this, nearly 1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted almost each year. This has a negative impact on the society and hampers the decrease in rate of carbon emission. Therefore, it becomes important to consume healthy food products, as it reduces the ecological impact on the society. Moreover, one should focus on the ways in which the wastage of food could be reduced. It will help to create a positive ecological impact on the societal development. It is important that one should ensure the consumption of plant-based food products over animal products. This will reduce the level of carbon emission and will help to create a sustainable environment.
Increase in the rate of population could be considered as one of the major concerns for the negativity of ecological footprint. The United Nations has predicted that the earth population would be somewhat 15.6 billion in the 22nd century. This could be considered a serious concern for the planet, as the increasing rate of population has a negative impact on the level of carbon emission and ecological footprint. As a result, it is the duty of the government to make sure that they take all the possible measures to manage population in the right manner, so that its negative impact could be minimised. It could be examined that population growth is directly linked with the maintenance of sustainability in the environment (overshootday.org, 2020). However, raising the topic of population could be considered a taboo and highly sensitive in nature leading people to completely deviate from the topic of sustainability. Therefore, in most case, it is observed that human flourishing should be offered more importance than that of economic growth. With the help of this, one can understand the ways in which the ecological footprint could be controlled and manifested for a better future (Collins & Cooper, 2017).
The ratio of ecological footprint depends on the management of natural and renewable resources of the earth. It is important to analyse that the different aspects of the earth are responsible for managing and controlling life on the planet. However, the aspects could be stated under enormous pressure from the waste generated by mankind. It is highly imperative to make sure that the natural resources are being maintained in the right manner. They contribute to the development of life in the planet. However, the waste generated in the planet has affected the growth of life in a negative manner (overshootday.org, 2020). Besides this, the psychological and spiritual grounds of mankind is developed in terms of enhancing the climate. It is important to focus on maintaining the natural resources for the reducing of carbon emission. It aids in the process of nurturing growth and healthy lifestyle in the society.
From the discussions mentioned above, it could be concluded that the development of natural resources is important. It is necessary to maintain the natural resources for enhancing the lifestyle of the future generation. With the help of this, one can analyse the negative impact of ecological footprint as well as emission of carbon. The results of the quiz stated that the consumption of natural resources has increased with the passage of time. However, it is the duty of humans to focus on managing and maintaining their consumption of natural resources, so that it does not result in deficits in the future. The study illustrates and reflects upon the results of the quiz and it helps to understand most of the reasons that ideally responsible for the increase in carbon emission. Besides this, both parts of the results have been analysed individually in the study.
The later section of the study analyses the ways in which solutions could be provided to the problems of ecological footprint and excessive carbon emission being generated. The solutions ideally aimed at five major aspects that are included in the ecological footprint. City, energy, food, population, and planet are the factors included in the footprint. With the help of this, one can clearly understand the ways in which these resources could be preserved in an appropriate manner. Moreover, it helps to increase the level of sustainability in the environment by preserving the natural resources for future purpose.
