Ending Counseling

Dealing with The Feeling of Separation

The counselor-patient relationship is an intentional therapeutic bond that has been created for the well-being of the patient. The everyday activities get impacted as the separation process creates a sense of anxiety and stress in the patient. These intense feelings can be managed by expressing your thoughts and feelings with the counselor at the correct time. Moreover, giving yourself time to tolerate the situation is another way to deal with the feeling of separation (The Counseling Channel, 2008)

Dealing with Unfinished Business

It is always difficult for a person to forget the past and step into the new life and in some cases, the past creates a space for stress and emotional resilience in the present. The unfinished business always corrodes the peace of mind. Replacing the past thoughts with new and cheerful thoughts can contribute to mood improvement and help to train your brain to deal with the negative thoughts of the past (The Counseling Channel, 2008).

Dealing with The Ending Therapeutic Relationship

The ending phase of psychotherapy often leaves persons with intense grief and sorrow. To resolve the issue the counselor must include the termination step as part of the counseling which will encourage the receiver to deal with the anxiety and stress of separation. It also helps to ensure that receivers are ready to step into the next step of their lives. Talking about the termination of a few sessions before will aid in the termination process (Kolb, 2014).

Reviewing the Individual/group Experience

The effectiveness of the counseling or any therapy can be determined by understanding the individual experience if therapy is given on an individual basis. Individual therapy will be more effective while maintaining the confidentiality of the patient or the client (Corey, 2016).

Giving and Receiving Feedback

The exchange of thoughts and ideas forms the basis of a strong therapeutic relationship. Followed by sharing, empathy, and acceptance, comes the giving and receiving feedback process. It is important for creating and maintains a therapeutic relationship. It also forms a correct platform for evaluation of the therapy (The Counseling Channel, 2008).

Honor the Hard Work and Achievements

The ending and separation phase of the counseling is emotionally stressful however, the receiver should show his gratitude towards the counselor by honoring them for their care which improved the patient outcomes. It will encourage the counselor towards their professional approach (Kolb, 2014).
