Research Problem Statement

Conflicts are a major concern for organizations that can be caused by internal or external factors. It can influence the congregation and their attitude which might lead to failure. In an organization, several factors cause conflicts but it is the responsibility of a leader to prevent its growth and spread over the institution. Churches also face distinguished challenges in the form of conflicts. The church of Corinth has experienced several conflicts. As per the first letter of the church of Corinth, an exchange of writings between the Apostle Paul and the leaders can be identified with an existence of the conflicts. Different issues faced by this church are based on prostitutions, rival and divisions, incest, speaking in tongues, divorce and many more. A letter of Apostle Paul represents how to address these issues effectively. Additionally, it also provides corrective instructions to restore the Christian faith (Pali, 2018; Tucker, 2013).

Effective leadership helps in conflict resolution with timely actions. It also promotes smooth operations in the churches by allowing people to accept the changes. This study is essential in the current time as it emphasizes the true leadership and conflict resolution style of a leader to resolve problems that occur in the church (Campbell, 2018).

Research Purpose Statement

The key purpose of this research study is the evaluate the role of leadership in church conflict. It raises a need to understand the concept of leadership and its qualities to analyze the factors promoting conflicts in churches. Furthermore, this research also emphasizes the leadership qualities that can help in instigating and resolving conflicts. It can be noticed that the church leader plays an important role in steering divisions. In the views of Campbell (2018), the church of Corinth have faced a situation of leadership failure which further leads to the church crisis. Wherein, the followers were divided by the leaders to claim their ownership. Some of the audiences belonged to Paul while others followed Apollos (Pali, 2018; Tucker, 2013).

This research will be effective for organizations to manage a proper mitigation plan to focus on future growth and overcome the situation of conflicts. Research methods and approaches will be discussed in this paper to identify the data collection tools and analysis and justifies the selected research method.

Selected Research Method and Justification

This research paper is based on the quantitative method. It is identified as most suitable for the paper because of its numerical analysis and graphical representation. As compared to the qualitative research method, significant evidence and statistical representation are possible only with the quantitative method. The key reason for the selection of a quantitative research method is evidence support. Additionally, the data analysis process is easy for the opted method with a time-saving benefit. Through effective analysis of numerical data, most suitable decisions can be identified which can be verified easily with the use of statistics (Antwi & Hazma, 2015).

Through this research, the researcher can focus on the post-positivist approach to evaluate the relationship between church leadership and conflict crises at church. It can easily be evaluated through quantitative method rather than qualitative analysis with its effective presentation through statistical information.

Research Questions or Hypothesis

The primary research question of the study is “What is the relationship between church leadership and conflict crises at church”?

The secondary research questions for the study are as follows:

  • What are leadership and its qualities?
  • Which factors lead to conflict situations at church?
  • What are the prime factors of a leader that influence conflicts?
  • How can a leader overcome the conflict situation at church?

Intended Data Collection Tool and Analysis

Data collection is identified as an effective approach that enables the researcher to gather suitable research data and promote a detailed understanding of the research topic. Through the effective data collection technique, the research can be moved to a significant direction and represent the desired research findings. Two major data collection tools are primary and secondary. The primary technique of data collection gathers the information from direct source whereas the secondary data collection technique gathers the information from the indirect sources. Different examples of primary data collection technique are survey, interview and questionnaires while secondary data collection method is based on already published journals and articles (Goertzen, 2017).

For this research, a survey will be designed to send the respondents. Observation and interview methods will not be useful for this research. The survey method of data collection is cost-efficient and can collect the relevant data from the targeted population (Antwi & Hazma, 2015; Ponto, 2015). The researcher will gather responses from 100 participants with 6 different questions based on the research topic. To analyze the data from the survey, SPSS tool will be used to evaluate the suitable research findings.

Sampling Method to Be Used

Sampling method plays an important role in identifying the target participants for the research. Random sampling technique will be used by the researcher to gather the responses of different respondents based on the defined survey questions. This method is identified as most appropriate for the large population and it is free from all biases. A simple random sampling method is referred to as the selection of elementary units in a manner that each unit of the population will have an equal opportunity of being selected. To gather relevant responses from the survey method, the random sampling technique is considered as most effective (Antwi & Hazma, 2015; Palinkas, et al., 2015; Ponto, 2015).

Quantitative research approach determines the correlation between church leadership and church conflict in Burundi. It discovers the relationship between variables that are related to each other through statistical analysis. Through rational considerations, the established relationship can be identified by the researcher in an appropriate manner (Creswell & Creswell, 2017).
