Understanding the Consumer Perspective of Hospitalisation

The seclusion is the process that involved the involuntary confinement of the patient in the alone room that is done to physically prevent the leaving of the patient (Knox & Holloman, 2012). The use of seclusion considered to be controversial methods for the mental health patient as it isolates the individual to decrease involuntary action (Chieze et al., 2019). The essay is against the use of seclusion in mental health setting due to its concerning legal and ethical perceptive

One of the studies presented by Kuosmanen et al. (2015) discussed that seclusion in a mental health setting is utilized to control the aggressive behaviour of the patient. The seclusion option is considered to be best to reduce the harm caused by the person to self and the other individual due to a less stimulating environment. The seclusion in mental health is important to deal with the patient exhibiting the unusual behaviours that are negative. Moreover, the findings are contradicted by Haugom et al. (2019) by stating that constraining the individual behind the door with no health care professional can increase health-related complication. It is also considered to be the process that is unethical as patient autonomy is violated due to forced action of the health care professional. The ignorance toward patient autonomy is considered to be unethical that can lead to ethical or legal complication.

The legal concerns related to seclusion discussed by Khalifeh, (2015) by stating that the seclusion is important to deal with the irrelevant behaviour of the patient but keeping legal and ethical aspect in concern. The legal concerns related to the seclusion include the policies that are framed to reduce the chances of the seclusion as much as possible to provide quality care to the patient. Another legal aspect concerning the seclusion includes the safety of the health care professional is also important thus, during extreme conditions monitored seclusion can be done. One the other the ethical concern is discussed by Ye et al. (2018) by stating that seclusion is considered to be unethical as it directly deteriorates the human dignity, violates autonomy and self-determination of the patient. The use of seclusion for dealing with the aggressive behaviour of the individual is also considered to violate human rights. The seclusion is considered to increase the distress of the patient because of the inhuman treatment which is not suitable for their wellbeing. These concerns can be addressed by improving the care perceptive by increasing the participation of the patient in the care that will improve the autonomy and human dignity. The health care professionals are expected to consider all the treatment aspect before opting for seclusion.

The essay can be concluded by adding that seclusion is the process that should be utilized after the failure of all other option. The seclusion helps to decrease the harm to the individual and other people (patients and healthcare professionals) due to a less stimulating environment. The legal and ethical concerns raise the negative aspect of the seclusion that need to be addressed to improve the quality of care.
