Nursing Leadership in Clinical Practice

Hello everyone, I am ---------- and I would like to welcome you all at my presentation. I am here to share my views and the information gathered by me on the topic of nursing leadership in clinical Practice and how appropriate leadership leads to patient-centered care. Have you ever think of how appropriate nursing leadership can help in clinical practice and how this leads to patient-centered care.

Hence, today I would like to focus on the 3 major aspects to understand the same and they are:

  1. First of all, my definition of nursing leadership
  2. Followed by discussing the significance of nursing leadership and why it is important in clinical practice
  3. And at last, discussing about the leadership style preferred by me and why

So, nursing leadership focuses on leading, motivating, and inspiring the team members so that they will be able to achieve the following goals very soon and the goals are

  • Enhancing or bettering the quality of care
  • Appropriate direction and support, coordinating, motivating, collaborating, effective therapeutic communication, and advocating for patients
  • Provision of patient-centered care
  • Achieving optimal patient health outcome

Nursing leadership is considered to be one of the key elements in enhancing the quality of healthcare. Effective and appropriate leadership by the nurse leaders is considered as one of the most critical components leading to an organization to be effective, productive, and getting desired successful patient health outcomes (Sfantau et al., 2017).

The main area to focus on is that how any positive associations among the staff members and the in-charge leads to effective and efficient styles of leadership that tends to higher levels of patient satisfaction. Furthermore, Effective and efficient leadership has reportedly shown an indirect impact in reducing the rate of mortality, and this has been attained by inspiring, motivating, and supporting staff members by the nurse leaders.

Now, moving forward to our second focus of this presentation i.e. the importance of nursing leadership in clinical practice.

An effective nursing leadership approach is important for a variety of reasons. First of all, the clinical nurse leaders play an important role in satisfying the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and production. Effective and efficient clinical leadership skills of nurse leaders have the potential to empower the nursing staff during the provision of care with the skills for directing and supporting the patients as well as healthcare staff teams. It also improves the quality of care that has been delivered to patients; this in turn leads to the patient-centered care and ultimately improving patient health outcomes (AL-Dossary, 2017).

On the other hand, if we talk about organizational performance efficient nursing leadership leads to the betterment of organizational performance also. Leadership when lead to engaging the individuals of the staff with each has been seen to increase organizational performance (Habib, 2020).

My preferred leadership style is Transformational leadership.

Transformational leadership is Characterized by generating relationships among the staff members by motivating and inspiring along with building confidence in them and this type of leadership is implemented by effective management that establishes a culture of patient safety (Fischer, 2016).

This category of leadership has the potential of creating positive work environments for the nursing practice that leads to promoting high-quality patient care (Boamah, Laschinger, & Wong, 2018).

The leadership style inspires the staff members by engaging in higher ideas as well as moral values. For this, the leader should have a profound set of internal values & effective ideas (Doody & Doody, 2020).

According to Asif et al. (2019), the leadership style has 4 key components.

  1. Idealized influence: It portrays a leader as a paradigm for his subordinates to establish astonishing values of conduct, and convey institute vision to achieve employees’ confidence and trust.
  2. Inspirational motivation: It divulges a leader’s capabilities for expressing an organizational vision for motivating their subordinates to execute in an improved way.
  3. Intellectual stimulation: This specifies the ability stage of the leader to inquire about the problems their subordinates go through & to create a broad spectrum of ideas for addressing these problems.
  4. Individualized consideration: It involves the leaders to seek the employees’ differences & facilitating them with a guide for the supervision, support, and instruction to reduce the problems and accomplish their maximum capacity

The reasons for selecting this leadership style are:

Increases Productivity: In this style of leadership, the leaders trust and respect their followers and always go beyond expectations and put extra effort to complete the organizational objectives. The leader fulfills the attributes such as help, clarity, motivation, validation, and a positive work environment and this leads to an increase the employee productivity (Vatankhah et al., 2017).

Strengthening of staff morale: When it comes to Transformational leadership. The leaders focus on the requirements and motives of their clique so that the communication and relation advances to the higher levels of motivation. The leader enhances the morale as well as the performance of their followers with the help of different techniques such as helping them to connect to the assessment along with the communal individuality of the institute; inspiring them by becoming their role model and challenging them to work beyond what is expected from them (Yoder-wise, 2015).

Job satisfaction: The leader persistently remains associated with the behaviors of the workers in healthcare organizations and structurally empowers the job atmospheres. They support and cheer the nurses using their rational stimulation and involve them in the decision-making process and this entails job satisfaction (Choi et al, 2016)

Desired health outcomes of the patient: This style of leadership is more dynamic and has an inspirational vision that inspires the employees to augment above their self-centeredness and look forward to become a transformational leader such things leads to appropriate staffing and achieve desired patient outcomes and safe care (Bahadori et al., 2016).
