Transgenerational Trauma

Transgenerational trauma is the process by which trauma is transferred between the generations. First generation transfer their trauma to next generation and further offspring by mechanism of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This can also be passed through behavioural patterns, parenting practices, or any kind of violence act. Transgenerational trauma was developed in 1980 by First Nations and aboriginal people to clarify trauma cycle experienced due to colonisation of Indigenous people and communities. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced trauma effects on their social and emotional wellbeing with devastating effects. Those who experience this trauma are more likely to develop lifestyle diseases, poor mental and physical health, domestic violence, addiction, self-destruction behaviour, and stay in criminal justice system. CTG (Closing the Gap) policy is about closing the gap between Indigenous and other people linked to mental health conditions. The basic strategy to expand the health results for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are facing transgenerational trauma is to provide them respect, sense of safety, and build trustworthy relationship with them (Intergenerational trauma, 2020).

The strategy of registered nurse to maintain the transgenerational traumatic situation in Indigenous health is mental health therapy (Beckett et al., 2017). This could be done by motivating the patient dealing with trauma. Motivational care can improve the mental health and promote their emotional and social comfort. This therapy can build positive sense of identity among individuals to deal with the traumatic situations. In mental health, therapeutic role of nursing staff is to control the inpatient wards. In these wards, the nurses interacts with the patients and maintain their relationship for therapeutic progression and better results (McAllister et al., 2019). Before providing mental health service, nurse must interview the patient for his/her past exposure or post traumatic actions, and then provide mental health therapy accordingly. Moreover, in mental health therapy, nurses can provide healing services to the patient, and build a professional environment for better response for loss of trauma among Indigenous people. The measurable outcomes of using mental health therapy is the improvement of mental health and reduced level of trauma among individuals (Dudgeon et al., 2014).
