Development and Use of Language - Question 1

Journal Reflection

Purpose

The study targeted end-of-life patients and their families to provide them with intensive care through comprehensive nursing exploration. The study aimed to explore the meaningful practices for nursing professionals, explaining how the nurses should design good deaths, and identify the challenges the nurses encounter during patient interaction and how they affect the creation of good deaths (Stokes, 2019).

Outcome themes

The study was carried out by interviewing the intensive care unit (ICU) nurses, and after analyzing the results, the researcher came up with several key themes. The predominant theme from the study was making the difference that was intricately interlaced towards a good death. The study's major themes include designing a good death, navigating the professional nursing challenges, and making the program work.

Gibb’s Reflective Cycle

Experience in an end-of-life situation

Description: Tiana, my cousin, aged three years, attended the clinic with her father concerning her physiotherapy for her Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Since Tiana was very young, all the clinical questions were directed to her father. However, Tiana’s father did not understand much English and could not speak English fluently; therefore, the clinical officer preferred to use examination to gather information about the patient.

Feelings: Upon reflection, though Tiana’s case was new and complicated, the ability of the clinical officer who was attending to Tiana to communicate was not helping since she could not think of new ways to communicate with Tiana’s father. She could not even use sign languages or visual aids to make the family understand.

Evaluation: From Tiana’s case, I learned that clinical officers should know how to use all sorts of body language and tonal variations while communicating with patients and caregivers who do not understand their language.

Analysis: To improve communication skills and communicate with patients from different languages, clinical professionals need to increase their interactions with patients from other native languages (Walters, 2020). It is advantageous to learn using sign language since they complement language tools when necessary.

Conclusion: Conclusively, it is good to establish good communication skills to communicate with patients from different regions.

Action plan: The experience showed that I should work on my communication and approach strategies in diverse clinical conditions as a nurse.

Development and Use of Language - Question 2

Video Reflection

Important message from the video for being a nurse

From the video, it is clear that nursing is an art and should be made perfect through exclusive devotion and preparation before executing any nursing task. According to Jean Watson, nursing's main building block is caring, and therefore caring should be accorded top priority. Again, nursing is not just licensure or a degree but should include compassion and show a sense of accountability in a manner that shows professionalism. Another strong message that stands out is that advocacy, research, promotion of safe environment, management of health systems, and shaping health policies. The video also sends a message that nurses' unity is fundamental while practising and that they should be happy while serving others. Nurses should always be prayerful to strengthen their faith as they execute their tasks effectively to save or add value to their lives. Therefore, it is essential to pray to God because He has power over all nursing activities.

Banner's Model and Duchsher's Theory

Identification of the stage and a reason

According to the banners model, five stages are raging from novice to expert in the nursing practice. The steps include novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert (Quatrini Carvalho Passos Guimarães et al., 2016). According to Patricia Banner, the best stage I fit is the advanced beginner stage because I have been involved in real-world situations. I faced problems because I always focused on the rules and guidelines that I have learned; therefore, this becomes a big challenge as I always need guidance from expert nurses in the field. I find myself fit in this stage because I need guidance from my mentors most of the time.

Gibbs' Reflective Cycle

The Gibbs' reflection cycle was brought about by a researcher known as Graham Gibbs, and it involves six stages: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan (Tawanwongsri, 2019). I have learned the Banners six-stage model and noticed the stage that I fit in based on the analysis that I have done. Again, I have found out that every stage is as important as preparing and transitioning nurses to practice. I was happy to notice that being in the second stage offers opportunities for me to learn new things before proceeding to the next stage. I found out that I could apply the skills I learned and integrate with my mentor's directives. I concluded that there are many things that I should have learned, but I remained enthusiastic that I should learn more and more time and again. Having all this for the day, next time, I am supposed to be keen and gain new knowledge to keep growing in the nursing field.
