Background

Plastic is not degradable and provides harm to the environment. The packing of products includes the use of plastic in an insignificant manner. The hazardous substances in plastics affect the environment and lives of several animals. Recycling can be an effective opinion to reuse the plastics in the economy and reduce the impact (Saleem, Ning, Barford & McKay, 2015) However, the rate of recycling is identified as very low. It is directly linked with the health of individuals and is a matter of public health. This paper focuses on the products with a short span of a lifetime, identified for the single-use purpose that is made out of plastic without any considerations about the nature of plastic.

This topic is useful for the research as it can help to understand the issues related to plastic waste. Through this research, effective strategies can be identified which can deal with the conditions of elimination of plastic waste. Potential factors can be outlined that can promote waste management and bring effective policies in the economy. This research manages an effective structural study to propose waste management prevention techniques that are useful for individuals.

Aims & Objectives

This research aims at several waste prevention techniques that can be used for plastic waste management in the economy. Elimination of waste in the plastic industry is considered as the major focus of the study.

The objectives of the research are:

  • To study the efforts from the end of the policies in regards to waste management in the plastic industry.

  • To identify the main focus across the globe for plastic waste management.

  • To study the targets, indicators, and measures from the policy structure principles.

  • To analyze the areas of effectiveness and efficiency for plastic waste management.

Research questions

The primary research question of this paper is:

“To what extent the plastic waste management policies are effective and how it can be improved?”

The secondary research questions are:

  1. What is the impact of the available waste management policies in the plastic industry?

  2. What is the major focus area for plastic waste management across the world?

  3. What are the targets, indicators, and measures from the policy structure principles for plastic waste management?

  4. To what extent the plastic waste management is effective?

Literature Review

According to Singh & Sharma (2015), plastic management is considered a life-threatening issue for the world. Several efforts are made by the government to encourage renewable resources and innovative products that can are superior in terms of environmental, cost and performance perspectives. Sustainable practices for waste management are adopted by developing countries while it lacks in waste management practices.

In the opinion of Pettipas, Bernier & Walker (2016), the existing policy for waste management in Canada emphasis increased monitoring, education, outreach and awareness, law and waste management strategies and source identification. It leads to identify the consistent issues in the world that leaves a negative impact on marine life. As per Geyer, Jembeck & Law (2017), plastic has a major impact on the environment as 8300 million metric tons (Mt) of plastic have been manufactured to date as virgin plastics. This can lead to a waste of 6300 Mt plastic around the natural environment.

In the opinion of Saleem, Ning, Barford & McKay (2015), the usage of synthetic polymers in the form of oil sorbents, leads to plastic waste in a huge quantity. Thermoplastic polymers produce around 5-15% of solid waste across the world which is disposed of in landfills. According to Czajczynska, et al. (2017), the applicability of the pyrolysis process produces the link between the latest developments and different conditions in the natural environment. The effect of pyrolysis in waste management can be seen through chemical and mineralogical compositions in the products that promote the applicability in the residues.

As per Singh & Sharma (2015) sustainable practices are encouraged by the governments to control the plastic waste management applications which require additional efforts while Saleem, Ning, Barford & McKay (2015) said that the amount of plastic is generating by the industries in a high speed that impacts the environment through different scenarios. Lebreton, et al. (2017) explained that the plastic waste in the oceans affects the marine life and human health which requires several strategies that can assist in the ocean plastic mass balance exercises and work for the emissions in the environment for future use of plastics. The global model of plastic input represents population density, waste management and hydrological information that focuses on the baseline data for the plastic waste.

As per Wilts, Gries & Bahn-Walkowiak (2016), resource efficiency is based on the waste treatment that requires effective waste management. The present frameworks of waste policy propose incentives for institutions and the national level to analyze the policy gaps and fulfill the needs of policy management. Innovative instruments can provide an effective strategy to promote waste management structure and overcome the resource efficiency challenge. According to Haupt, Vadenbo & Hellweg (2016), the waste management system increases resource efficiency by focusing on the industrial ecosystem and degree of circulatory in an economy. The material content availability from waste promotes the recycling rates and improves the ecosystem through potential improvement.

As Galvez-Martos, Styles, Schoenberger & Zeschmar-Lahl (2018) said that entire waste management is based on the best practices of resource utilization which can be promoted through optimization of the environmental performance and reduction in the environmental impact. The entire value chain in the environment has a larger impact on waste management practices. Although Quartey, Tosefa, Danquah & Obrsalova (2015) suggested that theoretical recovery models can be identified as effective for waste management. Efficient and practical measures of plastic waste can be achieved through effective environmental management in the country. Sustainable Solid Waste Management (SSWM) is related to greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and the general wellbeing of individuals.

According to Haupt, Vadenbo & Hellweg (2016), an increase in recycling rates can promote efficient environmental solutions to overcome the issue of plastic waste. In the suggestion of Mourshed, Masud, Rashid & Joardder (2017), the plastic hazard is dangerous for human health and marine life. Management of contaminated groundwater and the fertility of the soil is a challenging situation for the society that is affected by plastic pollution. Lack of facilities, insufficient budget, and infrastructure development affects plastic waste management. Bangladesh has adopted a plastic waste management system to implement successful strategies and offer enormous energy solutions through plastic waste.

It can be suggested that plastic waste management policies are implemented by several countries through innovative procedures while lack of awareness and insufficient budget is identified as the major concern to maintain plastic waste management. Efficient and practice uses of plastic can be managed with sustainable practices in the economy. Increased awareness and education play a major role in dealing with plastic pollution and fulfilling the needs of plastic management. Recycling rates can be increased by sustainable practices and waste management strategies in the world.

Sources of Information

This paper focuses on the qualitative and quantitative approaches which represent a mixed method for the research approach. It promotes the identification of 173 measured for plastic waste which was implemented by several European countries to analyze the prevention measures. The information is based on the secondary data gathered by different sources such as books, published literature, articles, journal and numerous online sources that can provide strength to the research and lead to the desired direction. The major sources of information for this research will be based on the peer-reviewed journal articles to gather reliable data that provide unbiased information.

Different programs of national waste preventions are reviewed to gather information related to waste plastic issues. It also provides a view to evaluating the challenges of these programs and how to manage an efficient and effective policy for plastic waste management. This information is based on the global economy and provides relevant information to eliminate industrial plastic waste to promote better infrastructure and a healthy environment for all living organisms. The research is based on the subjective and numerical data both to provide a better view of the information and specifies the effectiveness of sustainable practices in plastic waste management.

Plan of action

This research proposal includes the outline of the dissertation that will be created after the approval. The structure of the dissertation will be based on the five chapters which are an introduction, review of literature, methodology, discussion and findings and conclusion, and recommendations. Each chapter includes specific information related to the project.
