Importance of Sleep on Repairing DNA

Critical Analysis of Articles

The article was presented by Cheung, Yuen, Wong & Choi in 2019 to highlight the wellbeing impacts of duty work. The study was done by taking moral approval from the Hong Kong East and Hong Kong West cluster research Ethics committee. The informed consent was taken in a written format to get surety of all the members. This was a cross-sectional observational research done on 49 healthful participants who use to work on a full-time basis. The study was highly valid and thus provided sleep and subjective diaries for the study. The conclusions were drawn from the study using a t-test to test the hypothesis statement formed applied to the population or not. In the newspaper article, the usefulness of sleep was presented by Zada, Bronshtein, Goldshtein, & Appelbaum in 2019. The experimental design was used in this study to know whether sleep increases chromosome dynamics to allow the decrease of amassing DNA damage in particular neurons. However, this study was not presented in an authentic source. Also, the reliability of the data was not found in the paper (Zada, Bronshtein, Goldshtein, Garini & Appelbaum, 2019).

Summary of Articles

The article presented was done by using observational studies to highlight the detrimental health effect of shift work. The purpose of the analysis was to assess the sound effects of severe sleep deficiency on DNA destruction. To do the study, a trial of 49 participants was chosen from which 24 were allowed to work overnight. The information was collected on working patterns, health, and sleep diaries of participants. It was found from the study that DNA damages the development of chronic diseases (Cheung, Yuen, Wong & Choi, 2019). In the other article, it was found that period-delay imaging of chromosomal producers in a particular cell of live zebrafish discovered that the sleep improves chromosome dynamics in particular neurons but not in more cell types. The findings of this editorial reveal that chromosome dynamics are the prospective makers to characterize single sleeping cells, and also suggested that nuclear preservation is the curative work of sleep.

Reflection on Learning About Primary and Secondary Research

I learned that primary research is the method of gathering information through researching by the researcher himself/ herself. The information is gathered from previous sources in secondary research. It is because in the research the researcher gets the basic understanding and knowledge on the topic to get an idea about the past. Bu, the primary research is the data on which the researcher can completely rely on. In both studies, one was an experimental observational study and the other one was also experimental design. This allowed both parties to collect the information themselves and relate according to their topic of research. This research is extremely reliable and valuable than secondary research. Though, there are disadvantages of this study also as this is more time consuming and high cost attaining. So, this reason for selecting a type of research is highly dependent on the choice of the researcher to choose whether he/ she wants to collect qualitative data or quantitative data. In both types of research, the study was conducted after comprehensive research was completed. The research team took charge of everything from choosing the best method to reach the desired audience by determining the need for information. The purpose of primary research is to answer specific questions for the accomplishment of the project. Some restrictions like budget and timeline are there. Hence, both the researches are useful to draw the inferences according to the need.
